Biography

Short Description

Gerebald (also found as Gerebaud or Gereboldus) was a ninth-century bishop of the Frankish see of Châlons-sur-Marne, the present-day Châlons-en-Champagne in northeastern France. Episcopal catalogues place him on that throne from about 864 until his death in 885. Nothing reliable is known of his parentage, birthplace, or early career; no contemporary biography survives, and later notices are brief. His working life belonged to West Francia in the later Carolingian age, after the Treaty of Verdun had divided the empire and while Viking fleets were raiding the river systems of northern Gaul.

The diocese of Châlons was a suffragan of the metropolitan church of Reims. A Carolingian bishop in that position was expected to oversee clergy and people, administer church lands, and take part in provincial and royal ecclesiastical assemblies. The decades of Gerebald’s episcopate saw the reigns of Charles the Bald and his immediate successors, together with repeated Scandinavian incursions and aristocratic unrest. Specific acts of Gerebald’s government—council subscriptions, charters, or letters—are not securely documented in the sources that remain, so his personal role in those crises cannot be reconstructed in detail.

After 885 he was remembered as a saint. The cult appears to have been local rather than the product of a widely circulated medieval vita. Catholic calendars commemorate him on 12 June. Like many early medieval bishops, he was not the object of a later papal canonization process; recognition came through liturgical use and popular veneration in his own church. No trustworthy tradition records a religious order, a marriage, children, or the exact places of his birth, death, and burial. He remains an obscure figure, known chiefly from the dates of his tenure and from the persistence of his name in the sanctoral of Châlons.
