Biography

Short Description

Geremarus, also known as Germer, Geremar, or Geremaro, was a seventh-century Frankish nobleman, monk, and abbot. He is remembered as the founder of the monastery later called the Abbey of Saint-Germer-de-Fly in the Beauvaisis of Neustria. Traditional hagiography presents him as a member of a distinguished family of that region and as having been educated at the Merovingian royal court under Clotaire II and Dagobert I. There he lived as a courtier while maintaining a reputation for piety. He married a woman named Domane, and the couple had a son. Some recensions of his legend connect the death of their son with their subsequent turn toward monastic life.

Drawn into the circle of Saint Audoin of Rouen, a principal organizer of monastic foundations in seventh-century Neustria, Geremarus received the clerical tonsure from that bishop. His wife likewise entered religion. Geremarus first joined the monastery of Pentale in the diocese of Rouen and was made its abbot. His insistence on a more regular and austere observance provoked opposition among the monks, and he left the house.

He then established a new community at Flay, in the forested Pays de Bray within the diocese of Beauvais, around the middle of the seventh century. The monastery, originally dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, became known after its founder. Geremarus governed it as abbot until his death, which later tradition places about the year 658. He was buried at the abbey. The foundation belonged to the same generation of Neustrian houses as Fontenelle and Jumièges and likely followed a mixed Columbanian-Benedictine customary in its early decades; in the Middle Ages it was a Benedictine abbey.

A cult of Geremarus grew up around his tomb and remained essentially local, centered on the Beauvaisis and the diocese of Beauvais. His feast is kept on 24 September. The adjacent village took the name Saint-Germer-de-Fly. Because almost all narrative detail derives from a vita written after his lifetime and from liturgical sources, an exact year of birth, a securely documented birthplace, and many other particulars cannot be confirmed from contemporary evidence. He is nonetheless firmly attested as a monastic founder of the mid-seventh century whose abbey preserved his name and relics.
