Biography

Short Description

Saint Gereon of Cologne is a Christian martyr venerated principally in the Roman Catholic Church and especially in the city of Cologne on the Rhine. Hagiographical tradition identifies him as an officer of the Theban Legion, the legendary body of Egyptian Christian soldiers whose principal martyrdom under Saint Maurice at Agaunum (present-day Saint-Maurice in Switzerland) was first narrated by Eucherius of Lyon in the fifth century. According to the Cologne recension of the legend, a detachment of that legion under Gereon’s command was dispatched to the lower Rhine. When ordered by imperial authority, commonly associated with Maximian or the Tetrarchy, to offer sacrifice to the gods or to participate in the killing of fellow Christians, Gereon and his men refused. They were consequently beheaded at Cologne. No contemporary Roman source confirms these events, and modern historians generally treat the Theban Legion story as a later pious construction intended to explain clusters of anonymous martyr graves. The traditional date of death, often given as about the year 304, is likewise legendary rather than documented.

Despite the legendary character of the narrative, the cult of Gereon in Cologne is demonstrably ancient. Gregory of Tours, writing in the late sixth century, already knew of a basilica in Cologne dedicated to martyrs of the Theban Legion. Archaeological work beneath the present Basilica of Saint Gereon has uncovered a late-Roman oval building, probably of the fourth or fifth century, that appears to have served as a cemetery structure or martyrium. This architectural evidence indicates an early Christian cult site even if it cannot identify the original occupants by name. Over the following centuries the church was repeatedly rebuilt; the existing Romanesque-Gothic basilica, with its striking decagonal nave, became a collegiate church and one of the twelve great Romanesque churches of Cologne. Relics ascribed to Gereon and to a variable number of companions have been kept and displayed there throughout the Middle Ages and into modern times.

Medieval martyrologies and calendars give differing figures for Gereon’s companions, ranging from fifty to several hundred; the numbers 290, 318, and 390 appear in various texts. Later local traditions linked him with other Rhineland soldier-saints believed to have belonged to the same legion, notably Cassius and Florentius of Bonn and Victor of Xanten. In art Gereon is customarily portrayed as a knight or Roman officer, often holding a banner or palm of martyrdom; because of the Egyptian origin attributed to the Theban Legion he is sometimes shown with dark skin. He is counted among the patron saints of Cologne and of knights. Popular devotion has also invoked him against headaches, an association probably suggested by the tradition that he died by beheading. His feast is kept on 10 October, the date recorded in the Roman Martyrology for Gereon and his companions at Cologne.

Nothing reliable is known of Gereon’s birth, parentage, or early life; claims that he was a native of Thebes in Egypt rest solely on his identification with the Theban Legion. He is not recorded as having been married or as having belonged to any religious order. Formal papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense did not occur; his status as a saint rests on the ancient and continuous cultus that the Church has recognized from the early Middle Ages onward.
