Biography

Short Description

Gerhard Hirschfelder was born on 17 February 1907 in Glatz (present-day Kłodzko, Poland), in the County of Glatz in Prussian Silesia, then part of the German Empire. He was the illegitimate son of Maria Hirschfelder; standard biographical sources do not record a named father. He grew up in modest circumstances in a strongly Catholic German-speaking region and entered formation for the diocesan priesthood. After theological studies he was ordained a priest on 31 January 1932 in Breslau (Wrocław) by Cardinal Adolf Bertram for the Archdiocese of Breslau.

He first served as a chaplain in parishes of the Glatz deanery, including Tscherbeney. In 1939 he was appointed youth chaplain for the County of Glatz. His ministry concentrated on the pastoral care of young people at the moment when the National Socialist state was seeking to replace Church youth work with the Hitler Youth and to weaken Christian formation. Hirschfelder opposed that policy in public preaching. He insisted that Nazi ideology could not take the place of Christian faith and warned that whoever tore belief in Christ from the hearts of the young was a criminal.

That stance led to his arrest by the Gestapo on 1 August 1941. He was held first in Glatz and in other detention sites, then transferred on 15 December 1941 to the Dachau concentration camp, where many Catholic clergy from Germany and occupied territories were confined in the so-called priest block. Camp conditions—starvation rations, forced labor, disease, and brutality—quickly destroyed his health.

Hirschfelder died in Dachau on 1 August 1942, at the age of thirty-five, from illness and exhaustion caused by those conditions. After the war, Catholics of the former County of Glatz, including many expelled from Silesia, remembered him as a priest who would not remain silent. A cause for beatification was introduced, and on 19 September 2010 he was beatified in Münster Cathedral. Cardinal Joachim Meisner of Cologne, acting as papal legate, presided in the name of Pope Benedict XVI. He is venerated as a martyr of the Nazi period and as a witness to the Church’s duty to defend the faith of the young.
