Biography

Short Description

Gerin, also recorded in Latin sources as Gerinus or Guerinus and in some Frankish traditions as Warinus, was a seventh-century nobleman of the Frankish kingdoms who is venerated as a martyr. He is known almost entirely through the early medieval passiones and vitae of his brother, Saint Leodegar (Léger), bishop of Autun. The brothers belonged to a prominent aristocratic family of Burgundy. Their mother, Sigrada, is herself commemorated as a saint; after the persecution of her sons she entered the monastery of Notre-Dame at Soissons. In the factional politics of the later Merovingian period the family aligned with Burgundian and Austrasian magnates who resisted the power of Ebroin, mayor of the palace of Neustria.

That conflict intensified after the assassination of King Childeric II in 675. Ebroin, previously forced into monastic confinement, recovered authority and moved against his rivals. Leodegar and Gerin were both seized. According to the accounts composed in the following decades, Gerin was condemned and put to death by stoning: he was bound to a stake or pillar and killed by stones. Hagiographers presented the execution as a martyrdom, suffered in association with his brother’s defense of ecclesiastical rights and of the Burgundian aristocracy against what they portrayed as tyranny. The death is customarily placed in 677, a short time before Leodegar’s own final execution. The precise location is not established with certainty in the earliest texts; later tradition has proposed various sites in northern Gaul.

Leodegar survived further imprisonment and mutilation—blinding and the cutting of tongue and lips—before being beheaded in 679. Sigrada, already a widow and a nun, received word of her sons’ sufferings in her monastery. Veneration of Gerin never grew into a large independent cult. He was remembered together with Leodegar, whose feast on 2 October became the usual day for commemorating both brothers in a number of Frankish martyrologies and local calendars. Churches associated with the family at Autun, Poitiers, and Soissons preserved related traditions, though it is often impossible to separate seventh-century fact from later pious elaboration.

Apart from this outline, almost nothing verifiable survives concerning Gerin’s personal life, offices, or character. Later medieval genealogies sometimes named him as father or ancestor of subsequent saintly bishops, including figures of the following generation, but those constructions lack support in contemporary evidence and must be treated with caution. Gerin remains an obscure aristocratic victim of Merovingian factional violence whose memory is inseparable from the better-documented tragedy of his brother and from the political disorders of seventh-century Gaul.
