Biography

Short Description

Germain of Paris, also known as Germanus, was a sixth-century bishop of Paris in Merovingian Gaul. Traditional accounts place his birth near Autun in Burgundy toward the close of the fifth century, conventionally in 496. He is said to have been the son of Eleutherius and Eusebia and to have received his early schooling at Avalon and later at Luzy, where he studied under a kinsman named Scopilio. Ordained to the priesthood by Agrippinus, bishop of Autun, he entered the monastery of Saint-Symphorien outside Autun and in time became its abbot. The principal early narrative of his life is the verse Vita written by the Italian poet Venantius Fortunatus, who knew him; Fortunatus and later hagiographers stress Germain's personal austerity and his open-handedness toward the poor, which at one point caused discontent among monks who feared he would strip the house of its property.

King Childebert I of Paris, having heard of that reputation, summoned Germain from Burgundy and had him consecrated bishop of Paris in the mid-sixth century, an office he held until his death. In association with Childebert he promoted the building of a church on the Left Bank of the Seine to receive relics of the Spanish martyr Vincent of Saragossa, with a monastery attached. After Germain's death the foundation came to be called Saint-Germain-des-Prés and became one of the principal abbeys of medieval France. As bishop he took part in Frankish synods, including councils at Paris and Tours, which dealt with clerical discipline, marriage law, and the ordering of the Gallic church under Merovingian rule. Gregory of Tours also notices him in the Histories.

His episcopate coincided with the turbulent politics of Childebert's successors. Germain sought to restrain the marital irregularities of the Merovingian dynasty and is reported to have excommunicated King Charibert I for persistent uncanonical unions. He was known as an intercessor for prisoners and captives, using church resources and his standing at court to secure ransoms and releases. Hagiographical tradition, dependent largely on Fortunatus and on notices in Gregory of Tours, attributes to him miracles of healing and protection; those stories belong to his early cult and are not independently documented events. He combined monastic habits with the public role of a bishop in a royal capital and remained a moral critic of the court even when that stance brought him into conflict with kings.

Germain died in Paris on 28 May 576 and was buried in the church of Saint-Vincent that he had helped to found. Devotion grew around that tomb; the abbey adopted his name, and his feast on 28 May entered Frankish liturgical calendars. In later Catholic usage he has been invoked as a patron of Paris and of prisoners. Saint-Germain-des-Prés became a major centre of Benedictine learning in the early modern period. During the French Revolution the monastic community was dissolved, the church was damaged, and relics associated with the saint were largely scattered or destroyed, though the church survives as a parish church in Paris and his cult continues in the Catholic Church.
