Biography

Short Description

The single name Germain (Latin Germanus) does not identify one historical person in Christian hagiography. It is the ordinary French form of a name borne by several bishops, monks, and at least one patriarch, chiefly in late antique Gaul and in eighth-century Constantinople. Medieval martyrologies and later diocesan calendars add further local figures of the same name whose lives are only thinly attested. Without a see, a feast day, a century, or another distinguishing epithet, the dates, places, offices, and cult that belong to a single biography cannot be assigned from reliable sources. The fields that require one verified birth year, death year, city, or title are therefore left blank. What follows is not a composite life, but a cautious account of the principal, source-based careers that the name most often denotes.

The best-documented Gallic bishop called Germanus is the fifth-century bishop of Auxerre. A life written within about a generation by Constantius of Lyon, and an independent notice in the chronicle of Prosper of Aquitaine, place him in Roman Gaul in the first half of the fifth century. Constantius presents him as a native of Auxerre, trained in letters and law and employed in the imperial administration before clergy and people made him bishop of that city. In 429, according to Prosper, he was sent to Britain with Lupus of Troyes to oppose Pelagian teaching among British clergy; Constantius describes a second visit as well and the so-called Alleluia episode against raiders. The same vita has him die at Ravenna while on an embassy, after which his body was returned to Auxerre. His feast has long been kept on 31 July. Later legend, including claims that he ordained Patrick of Ireland, goes beyond what the fifth-century texts will bear and is not treated here as established fact. Birth in a precise year is not documented; the figures sometimes printed in modern handbooks are reconstructions, not contemporary records.

A second major cult is that of Germain, bishop of Paris in the sixth century. Sixth-century witnesses, including Venantius Fortunatus, and the later monastic tradition of the house on the Left Bank of the Seine, place his origin in the Autunois, in Burgundian Gaul, and his early life at the monastery of Saint-Symphorien at Autun, of which he became abbot. King Childebert I of the Franks had him made bishop of Paris in the mid-sixth century. He is associated with the foundation of a basilica and monastery first dedicated to Saint Vincent, afterward known as Saint-Germain-des-Prés, where he was buried. He died in Paris in the later sixth century; his feast is kept on 28 May. The abbey that took his name became one of the principal Benedictine houses of medieval France and carried his cult widely. As with his namesake of Auxerre, a single verified year of birth is not preserved in contemporary sources.

A third figure of high rank is Germanus I, patriarch of Constantinople in the early eighth century. Greek and Latin sources agree that he occupied the see in the 710s and 720s and that he opposed the iconoclast policy of the emperor Leo III. He had previously been bishop of Cyzicus. Deposed when he would not accept the new imperial line on images, he died in retirement in the following years; the exact year of death is reported inconsistently in the tradition. He is commemorated in the Byzantine calendar and left writings on the holy images and on liturgical questions. Because he held the office of patriarch of Constantinople, he would be classed as a patriarch in the strict sense, but only if he were the intended subject—which the bare name Germain does not establish.

Other saints called Germanus or Germain appear in medieval calendars, among them a bishop of Capua in the Italian tradition and various more obscure monastic or diocesan figures. The shepherdess of Pibrac is Germaine, a distinct feminine form, and is not the subject named here. None of these lives can be selected as the intended biography on the evidence given. Early cults of this period were typically recognized by local churches and by entry in martyrologies rather than by a later papal act of canonization or beatification whose agent can be named. Patronages likewise belong to particular cults (Auxerre, Paris and Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and so on) and cannot be listed for an unidentified Germain. Until a see, feast, or other unique marker is supplied, no single year, place, order, marriage, or office should be attached to the name.
