Biography

Short Description

Gerontius was Archbishop of Milan in the middle of the fifth century, during the last generation of the Western Roman Empire. Virtually nothing can be established about his origins, family, education, or career before he became bishop. He was elected to the see of Milan in 462, succeeding Eusebius, and was consecrated by the bishops of his own North Italian ecclesiastical province rather than by the Bishop of Rome, in keeping with the custom then current in the region. His episcopate lasted only about three years.

The only personal qualities attributed to him in surviving literature come from Magnus Felix Ennodius, later bishop of Pavia, who wrote in the early sixth century and remembered Gerontius as a man distinguished by charity. He is also described as a close friend of Pope Hilarius, who occupied the Roman see from 461 to 468. No letters, sermons, or conciliar acts of Gerontius himself have been preserved, and the sources are silent about any specific pastoral initiatives, building works, or responses to the political and military pressures that affected northern Italy in those decades.

Milan (Mediolanum) was no longer an imperial residence, the court having long since moved to Ravenna, yet it remained a major metropolitan centre. The years of Gerontius’s tenure coincided with the shadowy reign of the emperor Libius Severus and with continuing instability in Italy, but nothing in the extant record links the bishop personally to those events. After this brief episcopate he died on 5 May 465 and was buried in the basilica of Saint Simplician in Milan, a church already associated with earlier holy bishops of the city. His relics have remained there and have been the object of local veneration. The Catholic Church honours him as a saint and keeps his feast on 5 May.

A later medieval legend, which historians regard as without historical foundation, claimed that Gerontius had translated the relics of the Three Magi from Constantinople to Milan; those relics were in fact taken to Cologne in 1164. Apart from the sparse notices summarized here, the life of Gerontius is lost to history, a reminder of how fragmentary the record remains for many Italian bishops of the later fifth century.
