Biography

Short Description

Gertrude of Aldenberg, also called Gertrude of Altenberg, was a thirteenth-century German noblewoman and Premonstratensian abbess who is venerated as a blessed in the Catholic Church. She was born in 1227, the youngest of the three children of Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia, and Elizabeth of Hungary. Through her mother she was a granddaughter of King Andrew II of Hungary and belonged by birth to the Árpád dynasty as well as to the Ludowingian house that ruled Thuringia. Her father died in 1227 at Otranto while on his way to join the imperial crusade, leaving Elizabeth a widow. Gertrude’s older brother Hermann stood heir to the landgraviate; her sister Sophie later married Henry II, Duke of Brabant, and played a major part in the contested succession that produced the landgraviate of Hesse. Elizabeth, after leaving the Wartburg, settled at Marburg and became renowned for her care of the poor and the sick; she died in 1231 and was canonized in 1235.

While still a small child, Gertrude was placed in the Premonstratensian convent of Altenberg, or Aldenberg, near Wetzlar in the Diocese of Trier, in the region of the Lahn in what is now Hesse. Sources associate this offering of the child to religious life with the period of her mother’s last years or with the year of Elizabeth’s death. The community she entered was one of canonesses regular of the Order of Prémontré, following the rule and customs established by Norbert of Xanten in the twelfth century. Gertrude was educated in the cloister, made her profession there, and grew up far from the courts in which her siblings remained involved. The recent canonization of her mother made the young canoness a living link to a celebrated saint, but the historical record of her own childhood inside the convent is sparse.

In 1248 the nuns of Altenberg elected Gertrude as their abbess, when she was about twenty-one years old. She remained in office until her death, a tenure of roughly forty-nine years and one of the longer recorded abbacies of the century in the German lands. Later tradition presents her as a careful administrator and a religious superior who combined personal austerity with charity toward the poor, in conscious continuity with her mother’s example. During the decades of her rule the convent maintained its regular life and its local works of hospitality and relief; the monastic church at Altenberg, in Gothic form, belongs to the thirteenth-century fabric of the house and thus to the era of her government. Surviving evidence does not support a detailed reconstruction of visions, miracles, or inner graces often attached to medieval abbesses in later legend, and it is safer to say that her reputation rested on long fidelity to office, noble birth joined to monastic observance, and the reflected glory of Saint Elizabeth.

Gertrude died at Altenberg on 13 August 1297 and was buried in her abbey. A cult in her honour grew at the monastery and in the Premonstratensian Order, which commemorates her as Blessed Gertrude of Altenberg. Her feast is kept on 13 August, the day of her death. She was entered in later martyrologies, including mention in an appendix of the Roman Martyrology as noted by older Catholic reference works. She is not known to have been the subject of a full papal canonization of the kind granted to her mother, and the precise history of any later confirmation of her cult is not firmly established in standard sources. Her memory has remained tied to Kloster Altenberg near Wetzlar and to the family of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, of whom she was the youngest child and the one wholly given to the cloister.
