Biography

Short Description

Gervasios Paraskevopoulos (Greek: Γερβάσιος Παρασκευόπουλος), often remembered as Papa-Gervasios of Patras, was a hieromonk and archimandrite of the Church of Greece. He was born in 1877 in Gargalianoi, in Messenia in the southwestern Peloponnese, then part of the Kingdom of Greece, and received the baptismal name Georgios. He pursued theological formation in Athens and entered the monastic life, taking the name Gervasios. He was ordained deacon and priest and was later raised to the rank of archimandrite. He lived as a celibate monastic clergyman, is not recorded as having married or had children, and never occupied a bishopric, metropolitan see, or patriarchate.

His principal public ministry was in Patras, the chief port of the northwestern Peloponnese and the seat of a major metropolis of the Church of Greece. There he served for many years as an official preacher (hierokyrix), a role concerned with public preaching and catechesis. Greek ecclesiastical accounts emphasize his austerity, his evangelical style of preaching, and his pastoral attention to the urban poor, the sick, prisoners, and children without family support. He was associated with charitable and instructional work in the city and was popularly known for giving away what was given to him. That work unfolded across a difficult stretch of modern Greek history, including the Balkan Wars, the First World War, the refugee crisis after 1922, the Second World War and the occupation of Greece, and the Greek Civil War.

He remained an archimandrite until the end of his life and is not associated with a Western-style religious order. He died in Patras on 30 June 1964 and was buried in that city. Local veneration at his tomb, together with icons and oral memory in the Peloponnese, developed in the later twentieth century, well before any synodal decision. In 2023 the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece formally glorified him as a saint. His feast is kept on 30 June, the day of his repose. He was neither pope nor patriarch. English-language documentation of his life is still limited; the outline above follows the points that appear with consistency in Greek church reporting—year and place of birth, monastic and priestly rank, long association with Patras, date and place of death, and glorification in 2023—without treating unverified miracle stories as established fact.
