Biography

Short Description

Gervasius and Protasius are twin brothers venerated as Christian martyrs and as patron saints of Milan. Almost no detail of their lives can be confirmed from sources contemporary with the events themselves. Their cult enters history in 386, when Ambrose, bishop of Milan, announced the discovery of their relics. According to Ambrose, he was directed to a burial place near the shrine of the martyrs Nabor and Felix. Two bodies of unusual stature were found; he identified them as Gervasius and Protasius, whose names were already known in the Milanese church. The relics were solemnly translated into the basilica Ambrose had recently built, the church later called Sant'Ambrogio.

The inventio took place amid Ambrose's struggle with the Arian court of the empress Justina over control of Milanese basilicas. Ambrose presented the newly found martyrs as heavenly defenders of Nicene faith. He described the discovery in a letter to his sister Marcellina and in preaching to the people. Augustine, then residing in Milan, later recalled the episode in the Confessions and in the City of God, noting miracles that accompanied the translation, among them the healing of a blind man named Severus, a butcher well known in the city, as reported also by Paulinus of Milan in his Life of Ambrose. These late-fourth- and early-fifth-century witnesses establish the cult and the Milanese burial; they do not record how or when the brothers died.

A subsequent Latin Passio, composed at an uncertain date and regarded by historians as legendary, furnished a complete story. It made the twins the sons of the martyrs Vitalis and Valeria. After their parents' death they are said to have given their property to the poor and to have lived in prayer and fasting at Milan. Arrested in a persecution, they refused to offer sacrifice to the gods. Gervasius was beaten to death with a leaded scourge; Protasius was beheaded. Medieval authors placed this martyrdom under Nero, in the second century, or in other persecutions. None of these datings rests on early evidence. Cautious modern accounts treat Gervasius and Protasius as possibly historical Milanese martyrs of the second or third century whose authentic acts had already been lost by Ambrose's time, or as figures known only through the cult that Ambrose inaugurated.

The Roman Martyrology and the general Western calendar keep their feast on 19 June. Relics ascribed to them were widely dispersed in the Middle Ages, carrying the cult into France, Germany, and elsewhere. The principal remains lie in the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio in Milan, in a sarcophagus associated also with the body of Ambrose. They are patrons of the city of Milan and of haymakers, and they have long been invoked for the discovery of thieves. The minster of Breisach am Rhein is among the churches dedicated to them; in Paris the church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais preserves their names in a prominent medieval foundation. In Christian art they appear as two youthful companions, often with palms of martyrdom and with a scourge and a sword.

Because the documentary base is so limited, responsible biography must remain modest. What can be said with confidence is that by the late fourth century Milan honoured two martyrs of these names, that Ambrose gave their relics a central place in the city's religious life, and that the resulting cult, enlarged by later legend, made Gervasius and Protasius enduring figures of Ambrosian and wider Western devotion.
