Biography

Short Description

Ghébrē-Michael (also written Ghebre-Michael or Gebre Mikael) was a nineteenth-century Ethiopian monk, Catholic priest, and martyr. He was born in Ethiopia toward the end of the eighteenth century; later Catholic accounts often give a date around 1790, but no precisely documented birth year survives. Formed in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, he entered monastic life and became known as a learned man, trained in Ge'ez and in the scriptural, liturgical, and theological literature of the Ethiopian Church. In an era when religious identity in the highlands was closely tied to the Orthodox establishment and political authority was fragmented, he belonged to the world of the monasteries and of the educated clergy rather than to the Latin missionary circles that would later shape his life.

In the 1830s and 1840s, priests of the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians, also called Lazarists) were working in Ethiopia under Justin de Jacobis, the Italian missionary later canonized as Saint Justin de Jacobis. De Jacobis sought to present Catholic teaching in a way that respected Ethiopian rite and custom. Ghébrē-Michael encountered this mission, studied the disputed questions between the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church, and in time entered into full communion with Rome. The conversion of a respected Orthodox monk and teacher mattered greatly to the small Catholic community and was received with hostility by much of the Orthodox hierarchy. After his reception he was ordained a Catholic priest by de Jacobis and associated himself with the Congregation of the Mission, serving as a native priest in preaching, teaching, and the slow formation of an indigenous Catholic clergy.

The Catholic presence in Ethiopia remained fragile. In the mid-1850s, amid shifting political power and opposition from Orthodox authorities, Catholics were arrested and pressed to recant. Ghébrē-Michael was imprisoned and treated harshly. He refused to abandon the Catholic faith or return to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. While still a prisoner, and as a result of the sufferings inflicted during detention and forced movement, he died in 1855; Catholic tradition, including the English biographical notices that follow the date 30 July 1855, regards him as a martyr. Precise details of his birthplace, the exact circumstances of his last journey, and his burial are not uniformly recorded.

He was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1926. He has not been canonized. He is commemorated especially by the Congregation of the Mission, which keeps his feast on 30 August, and by Ethiopian Catholics, who remember him as an early native Catholic priest and as a witness who chose death rather than denial of his faith. He was neither a bishop nor a patriarch, and his life after conversion was that of a celibate missionary priest rather than of a married cleric.
