Biography

Short Description

Giacomo Filon was born on 2 August 1900 in Santa Colomba di Collalto, a rural hamlet in the province of Treviso in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. He is known in religious life as Beniamino Filon (often styled Beniamino da Santa Colomba). He grew up in a devout Catholic household of modest agricultural means in a district long marked by popular piety and Franciscan influence. Drawn to consecrated life, he entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, received the religious name Beniamino, completed his novitiate and clerical studies, professed his vows, and was ordained a priest.

As a Capuchin friar and priest he lived and ministered in houses of his order in northern Italy during the first half of the twentieth century. Accounts preserved in Capuchin tradition and in later materials assembled for his cause portray him as a humble, prayerful religious, distinguished by Eucharistic and Marian devotion and by availability as a confessor and spiritual guide, with particular attention to the sick and the poor. His life unfolded through the aftermath of the First World War, the Fascist period, the Second World War, and the start of Italy’s postwar reconstruction. Publicly available sources do not furnish a dense, year-by-year chronicle of every assignment, and historians therefore treat secondary anecdotal details with caution.

In 1948, while still in his late forties, he traveled to the Marian sanctuary of Lourdes in southwestern France. He died there on 21 December 1948. Death at a major pilgrimage shrine associated with the sick helped spread a reputation for holiness, especially in his native Veneto and within the Capuchin family.

After his death, local devotion continued and a canonical cause for beatification was introduced. In the twenty-first century Pope Francis recognized his heroic virtue and conferred the title of Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized, and he has no universally assigned feast day or official list of patronages in the liturgical books of the Catholic Church. Surviving information remains relatively limited compared with that for more famous saints, depending largely on Capuchin archives, local testimony, and the acts of his cause.
