Biography

Short Description

Gilbert de Moravia, later venerated as Saint Gilbert of Dornoch or Gilbert of Caithness, was a thirteenth-century Scottish bishop of noble family. He was a son of Richard de Moravia of Duffus and Muriel de Berbeley. The de Moravia kindred, ancestors of the later Murrays, had established themselves as major landholders in Moray and the far north after the Scottish crown’s campaigns in the region in the twelfth century. A kinsman, Hugh de Moravia (Hugh Freskin), held Duffus and extensive estates that linked the family to Sutherland. Almost nothing is recorded of Gilbert’s birth, childhood, or education. By the early thirteenth century he had entered the secular clergy and held the dignity of Archdeacon of Moray, a senior administrative office in that diocese.

The neighbouring diocese of Caithness was thrown into crisis in 1222 when Bishop Adam was murdered at Halkirk. Local people, enraged by the enforcement of teinds, attacked the bishop, killed him, and burned his body. King Alexander II of Scotland launched a punitive expedition into the north. In the aftermath Gilbert was provided to the vacant see, most probably in 1223. The old cathedral site in Caithness was both insecure and remote from the more firmly controlled districts associated with his own family and with the earls of Sutherland. Gilbert therefore transferred the episcopal seat southward to Dornoch, a location better protected and more closely tied to de Moravia and Sutherland interests.

At Dornoch he founded a new cathedral church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and began its construction. Although the building was not finished in his lifetime, substantial portions of the medieval fabric, including the choir, belong to his episcopate. He is credited with reconstituting the cathedral chapter, settling a community of canons, and restoring ecclesiastical order after the violence of 1222. Contemporary documentation of his acts is limited mainly to charters and the evidence of the cathedral itself, but later Scottish tradition remembered him as both an able administrator and a man of personal piety who rebuilt the material and spiritual life of a troubled northern diocese. He maintained connections with the Scottish crown and with other magnates of Moray and Sutherland.

Gilbert died in 1245; later calendars assign the date 1 April, which became his feast day. He was buried in Dornoch Cathedral, where his tomb attracted local veneration. He was honoured as a saint in the medieval Scottish church and is often described as the last native Scot to be so enrolled before the Reformation, though his cult was of the local, episcopal type rather than the product of a formal papal canonization process of the later Middle Ages. After the Reformation the cult lapsed. Dornoch Cathedral, much altered in subsequent centuries, remains the principal monument of his episcopate.
