Biography

Short Description

Gilbert of Limerick, also known as Gillebert, Gille, or Gilla Espaic, was bishop of Limerick in Ireland in the early twelfth century and a central figure in the Gregorian reform of the Irish Church. The year and place of his birth are not recorded. His name appears in both Latin (Gillebertus) and Irish (Gilla Espaic, “servant of the bishop”) forms, and historians have long debated whether he was of Gaelic Irish, Hiberno-Norse, or even non-Irish origin. Limerick was a major Norse-Irish port, which may help explain his association with that see. He is the first bishop of Limerick who can be identified with any confidence in surviving sources, and he belonged to the secular clergy rather than to a monastic order.

By about 1106 or 1107 Gilbert had become bishop of Limerick. Around that time he entered into correspondence with Anselm, archbishop of Canterbury, who congratulated him on his elevation and urged him to pursue church reform. The letters show that Gilbert was already regarded as a learned reforming prelate, and that Canterbury took a close interest in Irish ecclesiastical affairs. Not long afterward Pope Paschal II appointed him papal legate in Ireland, the first person known to have held that office for the Irish church. In that role he worked to bring Irish organization, discipline, and liturgical practice into closer conformity with Roman and continental models associated with the eleventh- and twelfth-century reform movement.

Gilbert’s principal surviving work is the treatise De statu ecclesiae (On the State of the Church), sometimes called De usu ecclesiastico. The text, accompanied by a schematic diagram, sets out a hierarchical vision of Christian society in which the pope stands at the apex of the ecclesiastical order and the emperor or king at the apex of the secular order, with bishops, priests, and the various grades of clergy and laity arranged beneath them. It was intended as a practical guide to proper church structure and usage. Gilbert was a leading participant in the Synod of Rathbreasail in 1111, a landmark assembly that divided Ireland into territorial dioceses on the continental pattern and replaced older monastic-centered arrangements. As papal legate he helped give that settlement Roman authority.

In later life Gilbert remained bishop of Limerick and papal legate until age led him to lay down the legateship. According to Bernard of Clairvaux’s Life of Saint Malachy, Gilbert, by then an old man, yielded the office of legate to Malachy of Armagh, the leading Irish reformer of the next generation. He is generally held to have resigned the see of Limerick around 1140. Conventional accounts place his death in 1145, though contemporary annalistic confirmation is sparse and the exact place of death and burial are unknown. He was not formally canonized and has no established feast day in the general calendars of the Church. His importance lies in his work as legate, diocesan organizer, and author who helped align the Irish church with the wider Latin Christendom of his age.
