Biography

Short Description

Giles of Santarém, known in Portuguese as Gil de Santarém and in Latin sources as Aegidius, was a Dominican friar of the thirteenth century whose memory combines a modest historical core with a later hagiographical legend. He was born in the later twelfth century at Vouzela, in the diocese of Viseu in north-central Portugal, apparently of a family able to support advanced study. He first studied at Coimbra, then the chief centre of learning in the Portuguese kingdom, and afterwards went to Paris, where he devoted himself to medicine and the natural sciences taught in the schools. Reliable contemporary detail about these years is scarce; later writers present him as a successful physician before he entered religious life.

A widespread medieval conversion story, recorded in Dominican legendaries, claimed that Giles, impatient to master the art of healing, made a pact with the devil and signed a contract in his own blood in exchange for knowledge and success. After a period of practice he experienced a change of heart, joined the Order of Preachers, and through prayer—often attributed to the intercession of the Virgin Mary or of Saint Dominic—recovered and destroyed the document. Historians treat the diabolical pact as a literary motif of a type attached to other medieval scholars rather than as a documented event. What can be affirmed is that Giles became a Dominican, most probably in the earlier decades of the thirteenth century, and thereafter lived under the order’s rule of poverty, preaching, and study.

Within the Portuguese province of the Dominicans he held offices of responsibility, serving as prior of several houses and spending his later years at the convent in Santarém, the city with which his name is lastingly associated. He continued to practise medicine, directing his skill especially toward the poor and the sick who sought the friars. Contemporary reputation and later miracle collections credit him with numerous healings. He is sometimes linked with the compilation or transmission of hagiographical material, though no writings can be securely attributed to him. He died at Santarém on 14 May 1265 and was buried in the church of the Dominican convent there. His tomb became a place of popular devotion.

A local cult continued through the later Middle Ages and the early modern period. In the eighteenth century Pope Benedict XIV confirmed the immemorial cult of Giles, an act regarded as equipollent beatification. His liturgical feast is observed on 14 May. Although he was never the subject of a formal modern canonization process, Blessed Giles of Santarém stands as a representative figure of early Dominican life in Portugal: a university-trained physician who embraced mendicant poverty, a prior who combined governance with medical charity, and a saint around whom popular imagination wove a dramatic tale of sin and redemption.
