Biography

Short Description

Gilles of Saumur, known in German as Gilles von Saumur and in French as Gilles de Saumur, is an obscure medieval figure whose life is not securely documented in the principal Latin, French, or English narrative sources, episcopal catalogues, or standard hagiographical collections. The given name Gilles is the ordinary medieval French form of Aegidius (English Giles). The byname locates him in relation to Saumur, a town on the Loire in Anjou. Beyond that onomastic evidence, no contemporary charter, chronicle, or liturgical kalendar has been verified that would establish his dates, offices, or the existence of a public cult.

Saumur itself was a place of some ecclesiastical importance in the high and later Middle Ages. It lay within the diocese of Angers. The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Florent-lès-Saumur, refounded in the tenth century and richly endowed by the counts of Anjou, dominated the religious landscape, together with parish and collegiate churches in the town. Counts of Anjou and, after the Capetian annexation of the Plantagenet continental lands in the early thirteenth century, the French crown all exercised influence there. A man called Gilles “of Saumur” might in principle have been a monk of Saint-Florent, a secular canon, a diocesan cleric, or simply a native of the town who made his career elsewhere. None of these possibilities can be confirmed from the sources available for this notice.

Attempts to identify him with better-attested namesakes do not withstand scrutiny. The famous hermit Saint Giles (Aegidius), whose shrine at Saint-Gilles-du-Gard became a major pilgrimage site, belongs to a much earlier period and a different region. Giles of Assisi was a companion of Francis of Assisi; Giles of Rome (Aegidius Romanus) was an Augustinian theologian of the late thirteenth century; Blessed Giles of Santarém was a Portuguese Dominican. None of these men is described in reliable modern reference works as “of Saumur.” Lists of the Latin patriarchs of Jerusalem and Antioch, of the popes, and of the bishops of Angers likewise do not, in the works consulted here, yield a prelate whose name and origin match the subject exactly. Accordingly no claim that Gilles of Saumur was a pope, a patriarch, or a canonized saint can be sustained.

In the absence of a vita, a necrology entry, or an authentic liturgical feast, it is impossible to state a year of birth or death, a place of burial, a religious order, or any patronage. Whether he married or had children is unknown; if he was a cleric in major orders or a professed religious, later medieval discipline would have required celibacy, but that inference cannot replace documentation. Until charters from Anjou, the archives of the diocese of Angers, or a medieval kalendar giving a feast of “Aegidius de Salmuro” are produced and critically assessed, the biography of Gilles of Saumur must remain almost entirely blank. The present entry therefore records only what can be verified—the masculine given name and the toponymic association with Saumur—and leaves all other fields empty rather than fill them by conjecture.
