Biography

Short Description

Giovanna da Orvieto, known also as Vanna or Jane of Orvieto, was a Dominican tertiary of the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. She was born in 1264 in Carnaiola, a village in the countryside near Orvieto in Umbria, then part of the Papal States. Both of her parents died while she was still a child, and she was brought up by relatives. The surviving lives, which depend on Dominican tradition rather than on a rich contemporary archive, present her as a girl of marked religious seriousness who resisted family pressure to marry and who sought a form of consecrated life compatible with her poverty and her status as an orphan.

Unable to enter a monastery, she received the habit of the Third Order of Saint Dominic as a young woman and thereafter lived as a lay sister in Orvieto, supporting herself by sewing and embroidery. She is said to have produced liturgical vestments and other needlework for churches. Her manner of life combined this manual labor with fasting, night vigils, and attendance at the Dominican church. She remained unmarried and is described in the sources as a consecrated virgin. She belonged to the wider movement of penitents and tertiaries that flourished in central Italy in the age of the mendicant orders, a milieu that also produced other Umbrian holy women of the same era.

Later hagiography attributes to Giovanna a range of mystical experiences: prolonged ecstasies, visions of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the saints, and a reputation for prophecy and discernment of souls. She was sought out locally as an intercessor and adviser. Some traditions associate her with the stigmata or with a mystical participation in the Passion; these claims belong to the later cultic literature and are not independently documented in thirteenth-century sources. What can be said with more confidence is that she enjoyed a reputation for holiness in Orvieto during her lifetime and that her memory was preserved by the Dominican convent there.

She died in Orvieto on 23 July 1306 and was buried in the church of San Domenico. Devotion at her tomb, including reports of miracles, sustained a local cult through the later Middle Ages and the early modern period. On 11 September 1754 Pope Benedict XIV confirmed this cultus, which in the canonical practice of the eighteenth century constituted beatification. She has not been canonized. Her feast day is 23 July. Because of her lifelong work with the needle she is invoked as a patron of embroiderers and seamstresses. The historical record for her life remains thin; almost all narrative detail derives from Dominican vitae compiled or reworked well after her death, and many picturesque episodes cannot be verified from independent evidence.
