Biography

Short Description

Giovanni Antonio Farina was born on 11 January 1803 in Gambellara, in the province of Vicenza in the Veneto of northern Italy, in the years after the fall of the Venetian Republic when the region passed under Napoleonic and then Austrian rule. He came from a family of modest means and received his formation in the diocesan seminary of Vicenza. He was ordained a priest in January 1827 and was soon employed as a teacher and formator in that seminary, combining classroom work with pastoral ministry. The social conditions of the Veneto in the early nineteenth century, including widespread poverty and limited schooling for girls, shaped the direction of his priesthood.

In 1836 he founded the Institute of the Sisters of Saint Dorothy, Daughters of the Sacred Hearts, a congregation of women religious dedicated to the Christian education of girls, especially the poor. The foundation was his principal institutional legacy and remained under his guidance for the rest of his life. He also promoted instruction for the deaf and mute at a time when such education was uncommon, supporting schools and methods that would allow them to receive religious and practical formation. These educational works placed him among those nineteenth-century Italian clergy who answered social need through organized charity rather than through political programs.

In 1850 he was appointed bishop of Treviso, which he governed for a decade. In 1860 he was transferred to Vicenza, the see of his origin, and remained its bishop until his death. His episcopate was characterized by personal austerity, regular visitation of parishes, attention to the formation of clergy, and concern for the poor and for laborers. He took part in the First Vatican Council of 1869–1870. He continued to support the Sisters of Saint Dorothy and the schools associated with them. After a long pastoral career he died in Vicenza on 4 March 1888.

A reputation for holiness attached to him after his death and a cause of canonization was eventually introduced. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 4 November 2001 and canonized by Pope Francis on 23 November 2014. The Church observes his feast on 4 March. He is remembered as a diocesan priest and bishop whose response to the educational and social needs of the Veneto took concrete form in a teaching congregation, schools for the poor, and care for the deaf.
