Biography

Short Description

Giovanni Calabria was born in 1873 in Verona, in the Veneto region of northern Italy, into a poor working family. His father, Luigi Calabria, was a cobbler and died in 1882, leaving Giovanni’s mother, Angela Foschio, to raise the children in hardship. As a boy he had to interrupt his schooling and take paid work to help support the household. He nevertheless held to a vocation to the priesthood. After compulsory military service in the late nineteenth century, during which he served among the sick, he was able to resume studies and enter the seminary of the Diocese of Verona. He was ordained a priest in 1901.

From the beginning of his ministry he devoted himself to abandoned children, the poor, and the ill of Verona. In 1907 he opened the Casa Buoni Fanciulli, a home for orphaned and neglected boys. That work became the seed of a religious congregation of men, the Poor Servants of Divine Providence (Poveri Servi della Divina Provvidenza), whose priests and brothers were to live in evangelical poverty and to serve whoever was in need, relying on Divine Providence rather than on secured wealth. A few years later he founded a parallel institute of women, the Poor Sisters Servants of Divine Providence. Both communities received diocesan approval during his lifetime and later pontifical recognition; they spread from Verona through Italy and eventually abroad, conducting homes for children, the elderly, and the disabled, as well as schools, hospitals, and other works of mercy.

Calabria’s spirituality centered on trust in God’s providence, personal poverty, and the imitation of Christ in the service of the least. Unusual among Italian clergy of the first half of the twentieth century, he also cultivated an ecumenical spirit: he corresponded with Protestant pastors and other non-Catholic Christians, encouraged prayer for the unity of Christians, and sought respectful relations with Jews. He was in contact with leading churchmen of his age, among them Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, the future Pope John XXIII. Charity toward the marginalized and concern for Christian unity together shaped the identity of the family of works often called the Opera Don Calabria.

He spent his entire life in and around Verona and died there in 1954. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1988 and canonized him in 1999. His liturgical feast is observed on 4 December. He is remembered as a priest of the poor, founder of congregations dedicated to Divine Providence, and an early Catholic advocate of ecumenical dialogue.
