Biography

Short Description

Giovanni da Triora, born Francesco Maria Lantrua, came into the world on 15 March 1760 in Triora, a mountain town in western Liguria then belonging to the Republic of Genoa. Little is recorded of his childhood beyond the religious vocation that followed. As a young man he entered the Order of Friars Minor, taking the name Giovanni in religion. He completed the usual Franciscan course of studies, was ordained a priest, and for some years remained in Italy, where he is reported to have taught in Franciscan houses before volunteering for the East Asian missions.

The Franciscan presence in China was already centuries old, but by the late eighteenth century the mission operated under severe legal restrictions. Christianity was prohibited, and foreign priests lived in hiding or under the protection of local converts. Giovanni was sent to China in 1799 and, after the customary delays on the coast, made his way inland. He spent the following years serving Catholic communities in Hunan and neighboring regions, administering the sacraments, instructing catechumens, and sustaining a Church that existed largely underground amid periodic campaigns of suppression by Qing officials.

A fresh persecution broke out in the mid-1810s under the Jiaqing Emperor. Giovanni was arrested in 1815 and taken to Changsha, the provincial capital of Hunan. In prison he was interrogated and tortured. Qing judicial practice in cases of prohibited religion often combined pressure to recant with demands for the names of other Christians and missionaries. Accounts later used in the beatification process present him as refusing both apostasy and betrayal. Condemned to death, he was executed by strangulation in Changsha in February 1816.

The Holy See subsequently recognized his death as martyrdom. Pope Leo XIII beatified him on 27 May 1900 together with other martyrs who had died in China in earlier decades. On 1 October 2000, during the Great Jubilee, Pope John Paul II canonized him as one of the one hundred twenty Martyr Saints of China, a group spanning the seventeenth to twentieth centuries and including both foreign missionaries and Chinese laypeople, clergy, and religious. In the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar he is commemorated on 13 February and, with the other Chinese martyrs, on 9 July. Devotion to him has remained particularly alive among Franciscans and in his native Liguria.
