Biography

Short Description

Giovanni Ferro was born on 13 November 1901 in Costigliole d'Asti, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, into a modest family. He entered the seminary of the Diocese of Asti and completed his philosophical and theological studies there. He was ordained a priest for that diocese on 11 April 1925. In the following years he served in pastoral and formational roles, including as a seminary professor and later as rector of the diocesan seminary of Asti, where he was responsible for the education of future priests.

On 14 September 1950 Pope Pius XII appointed him Archbishop of Reggio Calabria, a historically important but economically strained see in southern Italy. He received episcopal consecration on 29 October 1950. He later also assumed the additional charge of the Diocese of Bova. As ordinary he was known for personal austerity, frequent visits to parishes across a difficult terrain, and particular attention to the poor, to priestly vocations, and to lay associations such as Catholic Action. Calabria in the mid-twentieth century faced poverty, emigration, and the lingering effects of earlier natural disasters; Ferro’s ministry emphasized presence among the people rather than administrative distance.

He took part in the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) as a council father. In the years after the Council he oversaw the initial implementation of its liturgical and pastoral orientations in his dioceses. He remained Archbishop of Reggio Calabria until his death in that city on 18 April 1970. Contemporaries and later local memory described him as a man of prayer, Eucharistic devotion, and simplicity of life.

A reputation for holiness persisted after his death, and a cause for beatification was eventually introduced. Following the diocesan inquiry and the Roman phase of the process, Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing Ferro’s heroic virtues on 6 April 2019, thereby declaring him Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized. Devotion to him remains primarily local, associated with the Archdiocese of Reggio Calabria-Bova and with his native Piedmont.
