Biography

Giovanni Liccio was a Sicilian priest and friar of the Order of Preachers, venerated as blessed in the Roman Catholic Church. Traditional Dominican and local sources place his birth in Caccamo, in the Kingdom of Sicily, in 1400. According to the hagiographical tradition, his mother died in childbirth and the infant was left in the care of others because his father could not provide for him. Accounts relate that he was near death from lack of nourishment until a woman who had recently given birth took pity on him and nursed him. He grew up in poverty in Caccamo. Little independent documentation survives concerning his childhood; the later vitae present him as having been drawn to the Dominican life after contact with the friars.

Liccio entered the Order of Preachers, made his profession, and was ordained a priest. His apostolate was spent in Sicily. He is credited with the foundation of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Caccamo, which became the principal setting of his later years and the place of his burial. He was known for preaching, for work in establishing and supporting Dominican houses, and for a reputation for personal austerity and devotion, especially to the Virgin Mary. As with many mendicant figures of the period, stories of miracles—among them healings and the provision of food in times of scarcity—were attached to his name during his life and after his death. These reports form part of the hagiographical tradition rather than of strictly contemporary chronicle evidence.

He lived to an exceptionally advanced age. The traditional date of his death is 14 November 1511, at Caccamo. If the conventional birth year of 1400 is accepted, he would have been more than one hundred and ten years old. He remained associated with the Caccamo community until the end. After his death a local cult developed; his tomb in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli became a focus of veneration and pilgrimage in Sicily.

In the eighteenth century his cause was examined at Rome. Pope Benedict XIV confirmed the cultus of Giovanni Liccio and beatified him on 25 April 1753. He was not later canonized. His feast day is 14 November. He is honored as patron of Caccamo, where relics associated with him are preserved. Outside the Dominican Order and the local Sicilian devotion he remains a relatively obscure figure, and the biographical record depends largely on later hagiographical compilations.
