Biography

Short Description

Giovanni Marinoni, also known in sources as Francesco Marinoni, was born in Venice on 25 December 1490 into a family of standing in the Republic of Venice. His father, Bernardino Marinoni, was a physician. He received a humanist and legal education, studying civil and canon law, and was ordained a priest in the 1510s. In Venice he obtained a canonry connected with the basilica of Saint Mark, a respectable clerical position that placed him among the city’s secular clergy at a moment when calls for reform of priestly life were growing stronger in Italy.

In the 1520s he came into contact with Gaetano da Thiene (Saint Cajetan), a fellow Venetian who in 1524 had co-founded in Rome the Congregation of Clerics Regular, later called the Theatines. The new institute sought a more apostolic, poor, and strictly regular life for priests, in contrast to the often comfortable world of cathedral canons. After the Sack of Rome in 1527 the Theatines took refuge in Venice, which made Marinoni’s entry into the congregation possible. He left his canonry and embraced the Theatine rule. In the early 1530s he belonged to the group that established a lasting Theatine house in Naples, then one of the largest cities in Europe and a centre of Spanish Habsburg rule in southern Italy. Naples remained the scene of his work for the rest of his life.

In Naples Marinoni was known as a preacher, confessor, and spiritual director rather than as a writer or public controversialist. He applied the Theatine programme of clerical reform through personal example, austerity, and care of the sick and poor, including during epidemics that struck the city in the mid-sixteenth century. Contemporary and later Theatine tradition presents him as a close collaborator of Cajetan in the Neapolitan foundation. He repeatedly declined episcopal promotion, including offers associated with the Neapolitan church, preferring to remain a simple clerk regular. That refusal is a consistent feature of his hagiography and fits the early Theatine suspicion of careerism among the higher clergy.

Marinoni died in Naples on 13 December 1562. He was buried in the Theatine church of San Paolo Maggiore, the order’s principal church in the city. A cult developed locally and within the congregation. In the eighteenth century Pope Clement XIII confirmed that cult and beatified him; he was not subsequently canonized. The Catholic Church keeps his feast on 13 December, the anniversary of his death. Outside Theatine and Neapolitan religious history he remains a relatively obscure figure of the Catholic Reformation: a Venetian priest who left a comfortable canonry for a new regular institute and spent three decades in pastoral and charitable work in Spanish Naples.
