Biography
Giovannina Franchi was born on 24 June 1807 in Como, in Lombardy, then under the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy and later subject to Austrian rule before Italian unification. She came from a prosperous local family and received a Christian education. After the deaths of her parents she inherited property and financial means. Instead of adopting the conventional life of a woman of her class, she devoted her resources and her time to the relief of the poor and the sick of her native city, visiting them in their homes and providing both material help and spiritual consolation.
Nineteenth-century Como, like much of northern Italy, was marked by recurrent epidemic disease, urban poverty, and the social strains of political change and early industrialization. Franchi concentrated especially on those who could not afford physicians or hospital care. Her example drew other women who wished to share this work of nursing the ill, particularly in private dwellings where the poorest often remained without assistance. The spirituality that shaped her service was centered on compassion for the suffering and on devotion to the Sorrowful Mother.
In the mid-nineteenth century she founded the congregation of the Suore Infermiere dell'Addolorata (Nursing Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows). The sisters combined a regular religious life of prayer with practical nursing in homes and hospitals. Franchi served as foundress and first superior, forming her companions in that charism and continuing herself to work among the sick. The institute remained rooted in Como while extending the same home-nursing apostolate that had first motivated her.
She died in Como on 23 February 1872. The congregation she established continued her work after her death. Her cause of beatification was later introduced; her heroic virtues were recognized, and a miracle attributed to her intercession was approved. She was beatified on 20 September 2014 in Como, in a rite celebrated by Cardinal Angelo Amato on behalf of Pope Francis. She has not been canonized. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 23 February, the anniversary of her death.
