Biography

Short Description

Gisela was a Frankish princess of the early Carolingian dynasty, a daughter of Pepin the Short, king of the Franks, and his wife Bertrada of Laon. Born in 757, she was a sister of Charlemagne and of Carloman I. The Carolingians had only recently assumed the Frankish kingship in place of the Merovingians, and royal daughters were frequently placed in leading monasteries that combined religious prestige with dynastic influence. Contemporary testimony, above all Einhard’s Life of Charlemagne, records that Gisela was dedicated to the religious life from childhood. Einhard adds that Charlemagne loved her as dearly as he did their mother and that she spent her life in the monastery to which she had withdrawn.

Gisela became abbess of Chelles Abbey, a royal monastery on the Marne east of Paris. Chelles had been founded in the seventh century under Merovingian patronage, traditionally associated with Queen Balthild, and by the late eighth century it was one of the principal houses of female monasticism in the Frankish kingdom. As abbess of a royal abbey, Gisela stood at the head of a community that managed substantial estates and maintained close connections with the court. The monastery was also a center of learning and of book production; its scriptorium formed part of the wider network of houses that supported the intellectual and liturgical reforms of Charlemagne’s reign, later described as the Carolingian Renaissance.

Gisela herself was regarded as a woman of learning. Alcuin of York, the Northumbrian scholar who became a central figure at the Carolingian court, corresponded with her and with her niece Rotrude, a daughter of Charlemagne. The surviving letters show Gisela and Rotrude seeking Alcuin’s help in the study of scripture and theology, including questions connected with the creed and with commentary on the Gospel of John. Alcuin addressed her in language that recognized both her royal birth and her monastic vocation, and he commended the studious life of the community at Chelles. These exchanges are among the more important pieces of evidence for the education of aristocratic women in the late eighth and early ninth centuries.

Gisela did not marry and had no children, remaining in the monastic state to which she had been consecrated in childhood. She died in 810 at Chelles, a few years before Charlemagne, as Einhard notes. Beyond the notices in Einhard, the letters of Alcuin, and the later memory of Chelles as a Carolingian royal abbey, the details of her administration and daily life are sparsely recorded, as is typical for even well-connected women of this period. Her career nonetheless illustrates how Carolingian princesses could exercise religious and cultural influence as abbesses of great houses while remaining tightly bound to the dynasty that had placed them there.
