Biography

Short Description

Giulia della Rena, known in devotion as Giulia da Certaldo or Blessed Julia of Certaldo, was born in 1319 in the Tuscan town of Certaldo, then in the orbit of the Republic of Florence. Traditional accounts describe the Della Rena family as of noble origin that had fallen into poverty. She was orphaned while still young and left Certaldo for Florence, where she entered domestic service. Hagiographical sources place her in the household of the Tinolfi family as a maid. In the city she frequented Augustinian churches and cultivated a hidden life of prayer while remaining in humble employment.

In Florence she was received into the Third Order of Saint Augustine, associated with the Augustinian community at Santo Spirito. Seeking a stricter withdrawal from the world, she later returned to her native Certaldo. There she enclosed herself as a recluse in a small cell built against the Augustinian church of Santi Jacopo e Filippo (Saints James and Philip). A little window allowed her to follow the liturgy and receive the Eucharist. She is reported to have remained in this anchoretic life for some thirty years, occupied in prayer, fasting, and contemplation, and to have become a figure of local veneration to whom townspeople turned for spiritual counsel.

She died in Certaldo on 9 January 1367. A cult developed around her tomb in the same church. Later generations reported that her body was found incorrupt, which strengthened popular devotion in Certaldo and within the Augustinian Order. The cult remained local and order-based for centuries until Pope Pius VII confirmed it on 18 May 1819, an equipollent beatification that granted her the title of Blessed. She has not received formal canonization.

Blessed Giulia is commemorated on 9 January. She is the patron of Certaldo, where her relics are kept in the church of Santi Jacopo e Filippo and where civic and religious celebrations in her honor have continued into modern times. Historical documentation for her life is limited and largely hagiographical, as is typical for a fourteenth-century tertiary recluse, but the outline of her birth in Certaldo, service in Florence, Augustinian tertiary profession, long enclosure beside the Certaldo church, and death in 1367 is the account preserved by the Order and by local tradition.
