Biography

Short Description

Giuse Tuân, known in English as Joseph Tuan, was a Vietnamese Roman Catholic layman and martyr of the nineteenth century. He was born in 1825 in the Nam Định region of northern Vietnam, then under the Nguyễn dynasty. A farmer by occupation, he lived an ordinary rural life and was a married man and father of a family. Like many Vietnamese Catholics of his generation, he practiced the faith amid recurring imperial campaigns against Christianity, which court officials treated as a foreign creed and a challenge to Confucian hierarchy and royal authority.

During the reign of Emperor Tự Đức, one of the harshest waves of persecution in Vietnamese Christian history took place. Mandarins were ordered to hunt missionaries and anyone who sheltered them. Giuse Tuân is remembered for having given refuge to a priest. When that hospitality was discovered, he was arrested. He was pressed to recant, typically by trampling a crucifix or otherwise apostatizing, and he refused.

He was tortured and, still refusing to abandon the faith, was beheaded on 30 January 1861 at Hưng Yên. His death belongs to the larger martyrdom of Vietnamese Christians under Tự Đức, which claimed clergy, catechists, and great numbers of ordinary laypeople. The Holy See later singled out a representative group of 117 martyrs from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; Giuse Tuân is counted among that group as a lay witness rather than a cleric or religious.

Pope John Paul II canonized the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs, including Giuse Tuân, on 19 June 1988 in Rome. Their collective liturgical memorial is kept on 24 November. Fine details of his early life, the names of his wife and children, and the place of his burial are sparsely recorded, as is typical for many Vietnamese martyrs whose memory was preserved chiefly through accounts of their arrest, confession of faith, and execution.
