Biography

Giuseppe Ambrosoli was born on 25 July 1923 in Ronago, in the province of Como in Lombardy, northern Italy, the son of Giovanni Battista Ambrosoli and Palmira Valli. His family was economically comfortable and later became widely known in Italy for honey production. Raised in a practicing Catholic household, he studied medicine at the University of Milan and received his degree in medicine and surgery in 1949. Those student years spanned the Second World War and the difficult postwar period in northern Italy. After further hospital training he concluded that his vocation was not only to medicine but to missionary priesthood, and in the early 1950s he entered the Congregation of the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus, the institute founded by Saint Daniel Comboni for the evangelization of Africa.

He was ordained a priest in 1955 and the following year was sent to Uganda, where he was assigned to the mission of Kalongo in the Acholi-speaking north, then a remote region with almost no modern medical infrastructure. He found a small mission dispensary and set about turning it into a hospital. Drawing on his surgical training, he operated, treated tropical and obstetric cases, and organized wards and staff. Over the next three decades he built St. Mary's Hospital Kalongo into a referral hospital serving a vast rural population. He also founded a midwifery school so that locally trained women could attend births in villages far from the hospital, aiming to reduce maternal and infant mortality. He combined clinical work with priestly ministry and lived in notable personal simplicity.

His apostolate unfolded through Uganda's independence in 1962, the dictatorship of Idi Amin, economic collapse, and the civil wars of the 1980s in the north. Ambrosoli remained at Kalongo, treating soldiers, rebels, and civilians without distinction of ethnicity, religion, or politics. In early 1987 fighting around the mission made the hospital untenable. He organized the evacuation of patients and personnel toward Lira. Already exhausted and ill, he was admitted to hospital there and died of kidney failure on 27 March 1987, in his sixty-fourth year. His body was later returned to Kalongo for burial.

A reputation for holiness and self-sacrifice led to a cause for beatification. On 17 December 2019 Pope Francis authorized the decree on his heroic virtues, granting him the title Venerable. After approval of a miracle attributed to his intercession, he was beatified on 20 November 2022 at Kalongo, in a rite presided over by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as papal representative. The Church commemorates Blessed Giuseppe Ambrosoli on 27 March, the anniversary of his death. He is remembered as a missionary physician who united professional competence with evangelical charity in one of the more demanding regions of twentieth-century East Africa.
