Biography

Short Description

Giuseppe Bartolomeo Menocchio was an Italian Catholic prelate and member of the Order of Saint Augustine who lived in the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He was born on 9 March 1741 at Carmagnola in Piedmont, then part of the Savoyard Kingdom of Sardinia. He entered the Augustinian order (the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine), which had for centuries supplied the papal sacristan at the Roman curia. Surviving published sources give almost no information about his family, his novitiate, or the earlier stages of his religious life; he belongs to the large class of competent but poorly documented curial religious of the ancien régime and the Restoration.

By long custom the office of sacristan of the Apostolic Palace was reserved to an Augustinian friar, who was normally consecrated a bishop in partibus infidelium. In 1807 Pope Pius VII appointed Menocchio titular bishop of Hippo Diarrhytus (known in Italian as Ippona Zarito), an ancient North African see used only as a titular diocese. He thus became both a member of the episcopal college and the official responsible for the sacred vessels, vestments, and liturgical preparation of papal ceremonies. The appointment came on the eve of the gravest crisis of Pius VII’s pontificate. French troops occupied Rome, the Pope was removed from the city in 1809, and the temporal government of the Papal States was abolished until the defeat of Napoleon. Contemporary accounts do not describe in any detail how Menocchio discharged the sacristan’s duties during the occupation and the Pope’s exile.

With the Restoration of 1814, Pius VII returned to Rome and the papal household was re-established. Menocchio continued in office as papal sacristan and as titular bishop of Hippo Diarrhytus until his death. He died in Rome on 25 March 1823, still during the pontificate of Pius VII. He was never a diocesan bishop with ordinary jurisdiction, never a cardinal, and never a patriarch; nor was he Bishop of Rome. No process of beatification or canonization was opened for him, and he has no feast day or recognized patronage. He is not known to have published major theological or historical works that circulated under his name.

Because Menocchio is an obscure figure, a responsible account must underline the limits of what can be verified. Standard episcopal catalogues record his membership in the Augustinian order, his titular see, his service as papal sacristan, his Piedmontese origin, and the years of his birth and death. They do not supply a full curriculum vitae, the names of his parents, the date of his religious profession, a list of writings, or a certain place of burial. As a solemnly professed religious and a bishop of the Latin Church he was bound to celibacy; there is no evidence that he married or had children. His life illustrates the continuity of Augustinian service in the papal liturgical household across the revolutionary rupture of the Napoleonic age.
