Biography

Short Description

Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo was born on 3 May 1786 in Bra, in Piedmont, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, the eldest of twelve children of the notary Giuseppe Antonio Cottolengo and Benedetta Chiarotti. Raised in a devout household, he pursued ecclesiastical studies and was ordained a priest on 8 June 1811. He later earned a doctorate in theology at Turin in 1816 and in 1818 was named a canon of the Collegiate Church of Corpus Domini in that city. For some years he combined scholarly and pastoral work, gaining a reputation for preaching and for attention to the poor of the Piedmontese capital.

A decisive change in his life occurred in 1827, when he was summoned to assist a dying pregnant woman who had been refused admission to the city's hospitals. Her death, and the destitution in which she and her child were found, convinced Cottolengo that Turin needed a refuge for the sick poor who were excluded from existing institutions. In January 1828 he opened a small hospital in rented rooms in the city centre, known as the deposit of the sick poor of the Volta Rossa, and relied entirely on alms. The work expanded quickly, drawing the sick, the disabled, and the abandoned.

During the cholera epidemic of 1831 the municipal authorities closed this first house as a sanitary measure. Cottolengo then transferred his undertaking to Valdocco, on the northern edge of Turin, where in 1832 he established the Piccola Casa della Divina Provvidenza, the Little House of Divine Providence. He refused stable endowments and insisted that the house live from day to day on charity, a principle he attributed to trust in Providence. Around the Little House he organized distinct families of residents and founded several religious institutes to serve them: communities of sisters, brothers, priests, and hermits, later known collectively as the Cottolengo religious family. The institution grew into a large complex caring for orphans, the elderly, people with mental and physical disabilities, and the chronically ill.

Cottolengo was noted for personal austerity, long hours of work, and a blunt, practical charity. Worn out by labour and illness, he was sent in the spring of 1842 to rest at a house of his brothers in Chieri, near Turin, where he died on 30 April 1842. His body was returned to the Little House in Turin, where it remains. He was beatified by Pope Benedict XV on 29 April 1917 and canonized by Pope Pius XI on 19 March 1934. His liturgical feast is observed on 30 April. The Little House of Divine Providence and the congregations he founded have continued and spread beyond Italy, remaining associated with care for people whom other institutions often reject.
