Biography

Giuseppe Benedetto Dusmet was born on 15 August 1818 in Palermo, then in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, to a noble family of Flemish origin that had long been settled in Sicily. His parents were Marquis Luigi Dusmet and Maria Dragonetti. From youth he was drawn to monastic life and entered the Benedictine abbey of San Martino delle Scale near Palermo, taking the religious name Benedetto upon profession in the Order of Saint Benedict (Cassinese Congregation).

After studies in philosophy and theology he was ordained a priest and served in teaching and administrative posts within the congregation. He later became abbot of the monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena in Catania, where he worked to restore monastic observance. In 1867 Pope Pius IX appointed him Archbishop of Catania, an office he accepted with reluctance because he preferred the cloister, yet he gave himself wholly to pastoral care of the diocese.

As archbishop he became known for personal charity toward the poor, the sick, and those struck by cholera epidemics in Catania. He visited the dying, organized relief, lived simply, and was remembered for begging alms on behalf of the needy. In 1889 Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal with the title of Santa Pudenziana; he continued his humble manner of life and close attention to his see.

Dusmet died in Catania on 4 April 1894 and was buried in the Cathedral of Catania. His cause advanced in the twentieth century, and he was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 25 September 1988. His liturgical memorial is kept on 4 April.
