Biography

Short Description

Giuseppe Lazzati was born in Milan on 22 March 1909 and became one of the most influential Italian Catholic lay intellectuals of the twentieth century. He studied letters at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, completing a degree with a thesis on the second-century Christian apologist Theophilus of Antioch. From his student years he was active in the Federazione Universitaria Cattolica Italiana and in Catholic Action, movements that formed a generation of Italian Catholics committed both to the Church and to public life. He remained a layman, never married, and lived a life of consecrated celibacy, combining scholarship with a disciplined spiritual and ecclesial commitment.

The Second World War interrupted his academic and formative work. After the armistice of 1943 he was arrested by the German occupying authorities and deported into the Nazi camp system; he was interned at Gusen, a subcamp of Mauthausen, and was not freed until 1945. The experience of imprisonment marked his later reflection on human dignity, freedom, and the responsibilities of Christians in political society.

In the immediate postwar years Lazzati entered national politics in the Democrazia Cristiana. In 1946 he was elected to the Italian Constituent Assembly and took part in the drafting of the Constitution of the Italian Republic. He subsequently served as a deputy in the Chamber of Deputies. After a relatively brief parliamentary season he withdrew from elective office to devote himself fully to university teaching and to the formation of the laity, convinced that the proper field of the Christian citizen was culture and the secular sphere rather than a clericalized politics.

Lazzati taught ancient Christian literature at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and became a leading Italian interpreter of the Fathers of the Church and of the relationship between faith and history. From 1968 until 1983 he served as rector of that university, guiding it through years of social contestation and institutional growth. He argued consistently for a clear distinction between the Church’s mission and the autonomy of political action, for the secular character of the state, and for a mature, educated laity capable of acting in society without confusing religious belonging with party allegiance. He wrote and lectured widely on Christian origins, education, and the lay vocation.

He died in Milan on 18 May 1986. The Archdiocese of Milan later opened a cause for his beatification, and the Catholic Church recognizes him as a Servant of God. His writings and example continue to be studied in Italy for their emphasis on the secular character of political engagement and on the formation of responsible Christian citizens.
