Biography

Giuseppina Gabriella Bonino was born on 5 September 1843 in Savigliano, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. She was raised in a Catholic household and lost her father while still young. Educated in a religious setting, she showed from an early age a strong inclination toward prayer and toward practical service of the poor, the sick, and abandoned children. Family expectations at first pointed toward marriage, but she chose consecrated life and made a private vow of chastity in the later 1860s.

In the 1870s she undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land together with her mother. The journey deepened her devotion to the Holy Family of Nazareth and became a decisive influence on the spirituality of the community she would later found. After returning to Piedmont she began to receive orphaned and neglected girls into her own home and to gather companions who shared her desire for a life of hidden service modeled on Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. In 1881 she established the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Savigliano. The sisters devoted themselves to the education of girls, the care of orphans, and assistance to the sick and the needy.

As first superior, Bonino guided the institute through its early years amid the social and ecclesiastical conditions of late nineteenth-century Italy. The congregation obtained diocesan recognition and gradually expanded its works in schools, orphanages, and among the poor of the region. Contemporary accounts describe her as marked by charity, personal austerity, and trust in divine providence. She continued to direct the growing community despite recurring health difficulties.

Bonino died of pneumonia on 8 February 1906 in Savona, Liguria, at the age of sixty-two. Her remains were later placed at the motherhouse of her congregation in Savigliano. The cause for her beatification was introduced in the twentieth century. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 7 May 1995 in Rome. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 8 February. The Sisters of the Holy Family of Savigliano have continued their apostolate of education and charitable work in Italy and elsewhere.
