Biography
Giuseppina Suriano, commonly known as Pina, was born on 18 February 1915 in Partinico in the province of Palermo, Sicily, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. She was the daughter of Giuseppe Suriano and Grazia Costantino and was baptized the day after her birth. Raised in a practicing Catholic household, she received First Communion and Confirmation in childhood and from an early age showed a marked piety and a desire to serve the Church. In her youth she joined Italian Catholic Action (Azione Cattolica), the principal lay apostolic movement of the period, and became a committed member of its female youth association, taking part in catechesis, parish work, and the Christian formation of other young women.
Although she felt a strong call to consecrated religious life and sought to enter a congregation of sisters, her parents withheld consent, in large part because her mother was in poor health and needed her daughter's help at home. Suriano therefore remained a laywoman and accepted this limitation as the will of God. She continued her apostolate in Catholic Action, serving in positions of local responsibility. On 29 April 1948 she bound herself to God by a private vow of perpetual chastity. Her spiritual life was centered on the Eucharist, devotion to the Virgin Mary, and a spirit of sacrifice; she was also known for encouraging priestly and religious vocations while remaining in the world.
From her young adulthood she suffered from a chronic heart ailment, generally described as the consequence of rheumatic disease, which she endured with patience and offered in union with the sufferings of Christ. She died in Partinico on 19 May 1950 at the age of thirty-five. A reputation for holiness attached to her memory in her native town, and a cause for beatification was later introduced. Pope John Paul II recognized her heroic virtue and beatified her on 5 September 2004 at the Marian shrine of Loreto. The Catholic Church commemorates Blessed Giuseppina Suriano on 19 May, the anniversary of her death. She is remembered especially as a model of lay apostolate and of fidelity to a hidden vocation of prayer and service.
