Biography

Short Description

Gjelosh Lulashi was an Albanian Catholic seminarian and martyr of the communist persecution that followed the Second World War. He was born in 1925 in Nënshat, a village in the Shkodër region of northern Albania, where Catholicism had long been rooted. As a young man he entered the diocesan seminary in Shkodër, the historic Catholic centre of the country, to prepare for the priesthood. Surviving sources on his childhood and family are sparse; what is firmly attested is his status as a seminarian of the Archdiocese of Shkodër and his death for the faith at about twenty years of age.

After communist partisans under Enver Hoxha took power in 1944–1945, the new regime moved quickly against religion. The Catholic Church in the north was treated as a political enemy, associated with Italy and the West and as a rival authority to the party. Bishops, priests, religious, seminarians, and lay Catholics were arrested on charges of anti-state conspiracy, collaboration, or membership in supposed terrorist groups. Show trials, imprisonment, torture, and executions followed. Albania would later proclaim itself the world’s first atheist state; the killings of 1945–1946 were the opening phase of that campaign.

Lulashi was arrested in this first wave of repression. Still in formation and not yet ordained, he was tried and condemned to death. On 4 March 1946 he was executed by firing squad in Shkodër. Accounts of the Albanian martyrs present him as having remained steadfast in his Christian faith and in his vocation. He belongs to the group of Catholics killed in the Shkodër area in the mid-1940s, when the seminary, clergy, and Catholic institutions of the city were systematically dismantled.

Together with thirty-seven other Albanian Catholics—bishops, priests, men and women religious, and laity—killed between 1945 and 1974, he was beatified on 5 November 2016 in Shkodër. Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided as representative of Pope Francis. The group is known as the Blessed Martyrs of Albania; their collective liturgical memorial is 5 November. Lulashi’s life is thinly documented in personal detail, but his place among that company is secure: a young seminarian who would not renounce the Church under one of the most severe anti-religious regimes of the twentieth century.
