Biography

Short Description

Saint Godeberta, also called Godebertha or Godberta, was a Frankish consecrated virgin and abbess whose memory is tied to the city of Noyon in Picardy. Almost everything that is known of her comes from a vita written in the eleventh century by Radbod II, bishop of Noyon, together with later liturgical notices and relic traditions. According to this account she was born at Boves, near Amiens, of a noble and well-to-do Frankish family in the seventh century. When she reached marriageable age her parents presented her at the royal court. The king, identified in the vita as Clotaire III, intended to marry her to one of his courtiers. Saint Eligius, bishop of Noyon and Tournai and a former royal goldsmith and counsellor, was present. He took a ring from his finger and placed it on Godeberta's as a token that she was to be the bride of Christ. The king yielded and granted her a small royal residence at Noyon, with land enough to endow a community of women.

There she founded a monastery and gathered twelve companions, over whom she ruled as abbess. The house belonged to the world of seventh-century Merovingian female foundations under episcopal protection; later catalogues often list her as a Benedictine, but that classification is anachronistic for her own lifetime. Tradition describes her as austere, given to prayer, fasting, and the formation of her nuns. Several miracles are attached to her name. When a fire threatened Noyon she is said to have quenched it by the sign of the cross or by throwing into the flames a candle blessed on the feast of the Purification. Other stories credit her intercession with ending drought and turning aside pestilence. These legends underlie her later reputation as a protector against fire, drought, and epidemic disease.

She died at Noyon, by tradition on 11 April toward the end of the seventh century or about the year 700, and was buried in her monastery. Her tomb became a local shrine. In the twelfth century her relics were solemnly translated, an event associated with Bishop Baldwin of Noyon around 1167, and a notable medieval reliquary chasse was made for them. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on 11 April as a virgin of Noyon. She is the patron saint of that city. The French Revolution scattered relics and suppressed the old religious houses, but churches and local devotion, including the former church of Sainte-Godeberthe at Noyon, preserved her name.

No contemporary Merovingian document confirms the details of her life, and historians treat the eleventh-century vita as a blend of genuine local memory and conventional hagiography. It is reasonably certain that a noblewoman of this name governed a community of nuns at Noyon in the later seventh century, that later generations linked her consecration with Saint Eligius, who died in 660, and that her cult was well established in the diocese of Noyon by the High Middle Ages. She stands among the aristocratic women who, by founding and ruling monasteries, helped to shape the church of Merovingian Gaul.
