Biography

Short Description

Godfrey of Amiens, also known as Geoffroy or Godefroy, was born in 1066 at Moulincourt in the diocese of Soissons, in Picardy in northern France. He came from a family of some standing in the Soissonnais. As a child he was entrusted to the Benedictine monks of the abbey of Mont-Saint-Quentin, near Péronne, where he received his education and later made his monastic profession. The observance of that house in the late eleventh century formed him in austerity, regularity of the Divine Office, and the reforming spirit then associated with the Gregorian movement in the Latin Church. Contemporary and near-contemporary notices present him from early adulthood as a monk of marked personal severity rather than as a career churchman seeking preferment.

In 1096 he was appointed abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Notre-Dame de Nogent-sous-Coucy. The community had fallen into both material decay and relaxed discipline. Godfrey is credited with recovering property, restoring buildings, and reimposing regular observance. His reputation for holiness and for competent government of a religious house spread beyond the abbey, and in 1104 he was chosen bishop of Amiens. Hagiographical tradition holds that he accepted the episcopal office only with reluctance, regarding the cloister as more suited to his temperament than the public burdens of a cathedral city.

As bishop he sought to apply monastic reforming standards to the diocese: he pressed clerical celibacy, opposed simony, and tried to recall canons and parish clergy to a more regular life. He also showed concern for the poor and for the maintenance of peace in the city. Amiens in the first years of the twelfth century was, however, a place in which an emerging urban commune was asserting liberties and in which many clerics were accustomed to a less austere manner of living. Resistance to his measures became open and bitter, involving portions of the cathedral clergy and elements of the urban population. Worn down by these conflicts, around 1114 Godfrey left his see and withdrew to the Grande Chartreuse in Dauphiné, intending to remain there among the Carthusians as a hermit.

Higher ecclesiastical authority would not accept the abandonment of an episcopal church. A papal legate and other prelates required him to return to Amiens and resume his pastoral charge. He obeyed, but his health was already failing. In the autumn of 1115 he was at the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Crépin in Soissons; there he died on 8 November 1115 and was buried. A local cult developed, and his name was later entered in the Roman Martyrology. The Catholic Church observes his feast on 8 November. The surviving evidence for his life is relatively thin, consisting chiefly of later hagiographical notices and scattered chronicle references, so that many details of his administration at Amiens and of his inner life cannot be recovered with certainty.
