Biography

Short Description

Saint Godfrey of Amiens (also known as Geoffroy d'Amiens or Godefridus Ambianensis) was a Benedictine monk and bishop in northern France in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. He is the figure most commonly intended in Western hagiography by the unqualified name Godfrey. Reliable sources place his birth about 1066 at Molincourt in the diocese of Soissons, in a family of sufficient means to provide for a monastic education. As a boy he was given to the Benedictine abbey of Mont-Saint-Quentin near Péronne, where he was formed in letters and in the Rule of Saint Benedict and where he made his profession. Contemporary and near-contemporary notices present him as a monk of marked austerity, attached to regular observance and to the reforming current then moving through the Latin Church.

Around 1096 he was made abbot of Notre-Dame de Nogent-sous-Coucy. In that office he is credited with restoring discipline, attending to the temporal needs of the community, and practising hospitality. In 1104 he was chosen bishop of Amiens. Traditional accounts stress his reluctance to leave the cloister for the episcopal chair. His pontificate fell in a period of urban agitation and of tension between Gregorian reformers and local clerical and lay interests. As bishop he sought to enforce clerical celibacy, to check simony, and to protect the poor. He also attempted to restrain the violence and claims of the commune of Amiens. These policies, together with a severe stance toward incontinent and simoniacal clergy, provoked strong opposition among parts of the cathedral clergy and the townsmen.

The hostility in Amiens became so sharp that Godfrey withdrew for a time from the city and sought to lay down his see. Hagiographical tradition records that he spent a period at the Grande Chartreuse, drawn by Carthusian solitude, until ecclesiastical authority obliged him to resume his pastoral charge. He took part in regional councils concerned with reform and with the peace of the Church in Francia. The sources do not present him as a papal legate or as a holder of any office beyond the abbacy and the bishopric of Amiens; he was neither Bishop of Rome nor a patriarch of an Eastern see. Consistent with Benedictine profession and with the Latin episcopal discipline of his age, he is not recorded as having married or as having children.

In 1115, while travelling toward a council at Reims, he fell ill and died on 8 November at the abbey of Saint-Crépin in Soissons. His body was taken to Amiens and buried in the cathedral. Veneration arose locally and his feast was fixed on the day of his death, 8 November. He belongs to the older pattern of saints whose cult grew from episcopal and popular recognition rather than from a later formal papal canonization, and the major historical collections do not name a specific canonizing or beatifying pontiff. Precise lists of patronages are not firmly established in the principal sources, though he remains associated with the church of Amiens. Other medieval figures named Godfrey, including Godfrey of Cappenberg, are distinct persons and should not be conflated with the bishop of Amiens.
