Biography

Short Description

Golinduch, known after her baptism as Maria, was a late sixth-century Persian convert to Christianity, venerated as a saint and martyr especially in the Eastern Orthodox Church. She belonged to a family of high standing in the Sasanian Empire and was raised in Zoroastrianism. She was married to a magus, a member of the Zoroastrian priestly caste. The principal surviving accounts include a Greek Life composed by Eustratius, a priest of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, which drew on an earlier Syriac narrative associated with Stephen of Hierapolis, together with notices in the church history of Evagrius Scholasticus and the History of Theophylact Simocatta. These sources present her as a woman of the Persian elite whose conversion took place while she still lived in Sasanian territory, most likely in the later years of the reign of Khosrau I.

According to the hagiographical tradition, Golinduch was drawn to Christianity through visions and through contact with Christian teaching. She received baptism and the name Maria. Her husband and the Persian authorities treated her change of faith as apostasy. She was arrested, tortured, and confined for a prolonged period in a fortress prison. The sources stress her steadfastness and the miraculous preservation of her life and chastity during this captivity. After the death of Khosrau I in 579, under Hormizd IV, she obtained her freedom, whether by release or by escape, and left Persian territory.

She then entered the Roman Empire. Tradition records that she visited the holy places in Jerusalem before residing at Hierapolis, also called Mabbug, in Syria. There she was known as an ascetic and as a woman of prophetic gifts. She is said to have foretold the political crisis at the Sasanian court, the deposition of Hormizd IV, and the restoration of Khosrau II with the military assistance of the emperor Maurice, events of 590–591. Byzantine writers treated her testimony as a sign of divine involvement in the Romano-Persian conflict of those years.

Golinduch died at Hierapolis in 591. She is commemorated as a martyr because of the sufferings she endured for her conversion, even though her death itself appears to have been a natural one after her arrival in Roman territory. Her cult is attested in Greek and Syriac ecclesiastical literature from the end of the sixth century. The exact year of her birth, the name of her husband, the precise place of her birth, and the location of her burial are not recorded in the sources that have come down to us. She remains one of the better-attested Persian Christian women of the Sasanian era, standing at the intersection of hagiography and the political history of the late sixth century.
