Biography

Short Description

Gonsalo Garcia (also spelled Gonçalo Garcia) was born in 1556 at Bassein (present-day Vasai), a Portuguese colonial port on the west coast of India north of Bombay. His father was Portuguese and his mother an Indian woman of the Bassein region, so he belonged to the mixed Indo-Portuguese community of the Estado da Índia. He was educated by the Jesuits at their college in Bassein, where he learned Portuguese and Christian doctrine and showed an early inclination to missionary work. While still a youth he attached himself to Jesuit missionaries leaving for East Asia and went to Japan as a lay catechist. There he spent several years, acquired fluency in Japanese, and assisted in preaching and instruction before eventually leaving Japan for Macau and then the Spanish Philippines.

In Manila he lived for a time as a merchant, trading in the regional networks that linked the Philippines with China and Japan, and he is reported to have prospered. Remaining devout, he sought admission to the Franciscans and was received as a lay brother at the Franciscan house in Manila, making his profession in the Order of Friars Minor rather than as a priest. His language skills, knowledge of Japan, and experience as a catechist made him a natural companion for a new Franciscan mission. In the 1590s he returned to Japan with Friar Pedro Bautista and other Franciscans, serving as interpreter, catechist, and helper in and around Kyoto and the Kinai region, where the friars had established a precarious presence under the regime of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Japanese policy toward Christianity hardened after the San Felipe incident of 1596 and amid Hideyoshi’s suspicion of foreign missionaries. Gonsalo Garcia was arrested with other Franciscans, Jesuits, and Japanese Christians in the Kyoto–Osaka area. The prisoners were publicly mutilated—typically by cutting off a portion of an ear—paraded as a warning, and then forced on a long winter march to Nagasaki. On 5 February 1597 they were crucified on Nishizaka Hill overlooking Nagasaki harbor. Garcia, then about forty years old, was among the twenty-six who died that day, later known as the Twenty-Six Martyrs of Japan. Contemporary and near-contemporary accounts present him as a lay brother who used Japanese to encourage companions and bystanders at the place of execution.

The group was beatified by Pope Urban VIII on 14 September 1627 and canonized by Pope Pius IX on 8 June 1862. Garcia is commonly described as the first person born in India to be canonized a saint of the Catholic Church. In the General Roman Calendar the companions are commemorated on 6 February (Paul Miki and Companions). In western India, especially in Vasai and the Archdiocese of Bombay, he is honored as a local patron and as a symbol of the early Indian Catholic community of the Portuguese era. Relics of the Nagasaki martyrs were dispersed to churches in Asia and Europe; no single undisputed tomb is recorded as his burial place.
