Biography

Short Description

Gordon Anthony Pantin was a Trinidadian Roman Catholic archbishop and a professed member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (the Spiritans, also known as the Holy Ghost Fathers). He was born on 27 August 1929 in Port of Spain, in what was then the British colony of Trinidad and Tobago. He came from a well-known Trinidadian family several of whose members entered religious life or public service. His brother Gerard Pantin also became a Spiritan priest and later founded SERVOL (Service Volunteered for All), a major social and educational programme in Trinidad; another brother, Clive Pantin, was an educator who served in government. Drawn to the Spiritan tradition long associated with Catholic education in Port of Spain, Gordon Anthony Pantin entered the Congregation of the Holy Spirit and was ordained to the priesthood on 3 June 1955.

In the years after ordination he served in priestly and educational ministry connected with the Spiritans in the Caribbean. On 29 November 1967 Pope Paul VI appointed him Archbishop of Port of Spain, and he was consecrated bishop on 19 March 1968. He was the first Trinidadian-born metropolitan of that see, succeeding an Irish-born predecessor at a moment when the local church, like other churches in the former colonial world, was moving toward indigenous leadership after the Second Vatican Council and after Trinidad and Tobago’s independence in 1962. As Archbishop of Port of Spain he headed a metropolitan province that included several Caribbean dioceses and was a leading member of the Antilles Episcopal Conference over many years.

His episcopate lasted more than thirty-one years and coincided with liturgical, pastoral, and social change in the post-conciliar Caribbean church. He oversaw the reception of Vatican II reforms in the archdiocese and represented the Catholic Church in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious national society in which Hindus, Muslims, and various Christian bodies all had a substantial presence. He was still in office when Pope John Paul II made a pastoral visit to Trinidad and Tobago in 1985. Contemporary accounts often described him as an approachable public pastor who spoke on moral and social questions affecting the country, while remaining a conventional diocesan bishop rather than a figure of radical ecclesiastical experiment.

Pantin died on 11 March 2000, still Archbishop of Port of Spain, and was later succeeded by Edward Joseph Gilbert. He has not been beatified or canonized, and he has no feast day or official patronage in the Catholic calendar. He is remembered in Trinidad and Tobago primarily as the first local archbishop of the capital see and as a central figure in the late twentieth-century history of the Catholic Church in the southern Caribbean. Standard hierarchical and obituary notices agree on his dates of birth, priestly ordination, episcopal appointment, consecration, and death; finer points such as the exact place of burial and the medical circumstances of his last illness are not uniformly recorded in those same notices.
