Biography

Short Description

Saint Gurias of Kazan, known in secular life as Grigory Grigoryevich Rugotin, was a Russian Orthodox monk and the first archbishop of Kazan in the sixteenth century. Traditional lives place his birth near the beginning of that century at Radonezh, in the lands of the Grand Princes of Moscow, in a family of impoverished nobility named Rugotin. As a young man he served as steward in the household of a Muscovite prince, commonly identified as Prince Ivan Penkov. According to his hagiography he was falsely accused of an illicit relationship with the prince's wife and was imprisoned for about two years. Church tradition adds that while confined he wrote a small book for teaching children to read. After his release he abandoned secular service and entered the Monastery of St. Joseph of Volokolamsk, a principal center of the Josephite monastic movement, where he was tonsured with the name Gurias. He later served as abbot of that house, in some accounts for roughly nine years, before laying down the office because of illness and, in certain versions of the Life, because of further accusations.

In 1555, after the Muscovite conquest of the Khanate of Kazan in 1552, a new archbishopric was created to organize Orthodox church life on the middle Volga and to missionize the region's Tatar, Chuvash, Mari, and other non-Christian peoples. Metropolitan Macarius of Moscow consecrated Gurias as the first archbishop of Kazan. He traveled east with a group of clergy and monks that included Barsanuphius and Germanus, both subsequently venerated as saints. They reached Kazan in the summer of 1555. Gurias founded the Savior-Transfiguration (Spaso-Preobrazhensky) Monastery within the Kazan Kremlin, appointing Barsanuphius as its archimandrite, and the Dormition Monastery at Sviyazhsk, associated with Germanus. He promoted the building of churches, including work connected with the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Kazan, and encouraged schools and almsgiving. Orthodox sources describe his missionary method as comparatively moderate, stressing instruction, liturgical life, and material aid, even while the wider conquest remained a military occupation and colonization. He is credited with numerous baptisms and with the pastoral care of Russian soldiers and settlers in a still unstable frontier diocese.

In his last years Gurias suffered grave illness, including paralysis, and was frequently unable to leave his cell, though he continued to govern through assistants. He died on 5 December 1563 and was buried in the Transfiguration monastery he had founded in Kazan. In 1595 Metropolitan Hermogenes of Kazan, later patriarch of Moscow, uncovered the tombs of Gurias and Barsanuphius. Tradition holds that the relics were found incorrupt, and local glorification as wonderworkers of Kazan followed; Gurias has since been commemorated as a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church. His chief feast is 5 December, the day of his repose (18 December in the Gregorian calendar), with additional commemorations on 4 October for the uncovering of the relics and in the synaxis of the saints of Kazan. The later history of the relics includes translations, losses during the Soviet period, and partial restoration of veneration in Kazan and throughout the Russian Orthodox world.
