Biography

Short Description

Gracija Kotorski, known in Italian as Grazia da Cattaro and sometimes Latinized as Gratia Catharensis, was a Catholic lay brother of the Order of Saint Augustine who is venerated as blessed. He was born in 1438 in Muo, a small settlement on the Bay of Kotor in the eastern Adriatic. In the fifteenth century the city of Kotor (Cattaro) and the neighboring villages, including Muo, belonged to the Republic of Venice, which had taken control of Kotor in 1420; the district formed part of the Venetian overseas territories often termed Venetian Albania or southern Dalmatia. Almost nothing is recorded in contemporary documents about his parents or upbringing. Later hagiographical tradition states that he earned his living as a sailor and fisherman, a typical calling among the people of the Boka Kotorska.

The traditional narrative of his conversion relates that, while in Venice in adulthood, he heard a sermon by Blessed Simon of Camerino, an Augustinian friar and preacher. Stirred by this preaching, Gracija resolved to enter religious life. He was received into the Order of Saint Augustine not as a cleric but as a conversus, or lay brother. His first community was the Augustinian monastery of Monteortone near Padua, a house associated with a Marian shrine. He subsequently transferred to the monastery of San Cristoforo della Pace on the island of Murano in the Venetian lagoon. There he spent the greater part of his religious life, occupied with prayer in the form permitted to lay brothers, with fasting and other austerities, and with the humble manual work of the house. Writers of his cult describe him as outstanding in obedience, humility, and charity toward the poor. Independent archival evidence for these personal virtues is limited, and much of the portrait depends on later pious literature.

Gracija died at the Murano monastery on 8 November 1508 and was buried in the church of San Cristoforo. A local cult formed around his tomb; devotees reported miracles and sought his intercession. The monastery and its church were later affected by the suppressions of religious houses carried out in the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy in the early nineteenth century, which disrupted the original place of burial and veneration. On 6 June 1889 Pope Leo XIII confirmed the ancient cult of Gracija, an act of equipollent beatification that granted him the title of Blessed. He has not been canonized and therefore is not inscribed in the general calendar of the Roman Rite as a saint.

Devotion to Blessed Gracija has remained strongest in his native region and within the Augustinian Order. He is commemorated in the Diocese of Kotor and in Muo, where a church is dedicated to him, and Augustinian communities have kept his memory, often on 7 or 8 November. Relics connected with him have been venerated in the Bay of Kotor. Because contemporary sources are scarce, many anecdotal details of his inner life must be treated with caution; what can be affirmed with reasonable confidence is that a Dalmatian sailor of the fifteenth century entered the Augustinians as a lay brother, died in the Venetian lagoon in 1508, and became the object of a lasting local cult that the Holy See recognized at the end of the nineteenth century.
