Biography

Short Description

Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna Romanova was the eldest child of Emperor Nicholas II of Russia and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, born on 15 November 1895 (3 November Old Style) at the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo. Court and dynastic expectation had been for a male heir, and her birth was therefore received with mixed public feeling, but she was raised with affection inside a tightly knit imperial household. Baptized in the Russian Orthodox Church, she grew up with her sisters Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia in a shared domestic routine that the four girls themselves called OTMA. Their brother, Tsarevich Alexei, was born in 1904 and suffered from hemophilia, a private crisis that deepened the family’s isolation from much of official Petersburg society and bound the children more closely to their parents and to one another.

Olga was educated at home by governesses and tutors in Russian, English, French, and German, as well as in history, religion, music, and the arts. Memoirists and later historians have generally described her as intelligent, bookish, and more reserved and independent-minded than her sisters, with a marked sense of duty. During the First World War she trained with the Russian Red Cross and, together with her mother and Tatiana, served as a nurse in the hospital established at Tsarskoye Selo, assisting at operations and tending wounded officers. She found the operating theatre more distressing than Tatiana did, yet she continued hospital work and correspondence with soldiers. Talk of a dynastic marriage, including a proposed match with Crown Prince Carol of Romania, was never concluded. She remained unmarried and had no children.

The February Revolution of 1917 ended her father’s reign. The imperial family was placed under house arrest at the Alexander Palace, transferred in August 1917 to Tobolsk in Siberia, and in the spring of 1918 brought to the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg under Bolshevik guard. Conditions of captivity grew steadily harsher. In the early hours of 17 July 1918 Olga, then twenty-two, was killed with her parents, her brother and sisters, and several loyal attendants by a firing squad in the cellar of the Ipatiev House. The bodies were taken to the Koptyaki forest and concealed.

After the collapse of Soviet rule, remains discovered near Yekaterinburg in 1991 were identified by forensic and DNA analysis as those of Nicholas II, Alexandra, three of their daughters (including Olga), and the servants. Those remains were interred in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg in 1998. The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia glorified the imperial family as martyrs in 1981; the Moscow Patriarchate glorified them as passion-bearers in 2000. Olga is commemorated with her family on 17 July among the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers of the Russian Orthodox Church.
