Biography

Short Description

Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna Romanova was born on 10 June 1897 (29 May in the Julian calendar then used in Russia) at the Peterhof Palace, in the Russian Empire. She was the second daughter and second child of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, who had been Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine before her conversion to Orthodoxy and marriage. Through her father she belonged to the House of Romanov-Holstein-Gottorp; through her mother she was a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Her siblings were Grand Duchess Olga, Grand Duchess Maria, Grand Duchess Anastasia, and Tsesarevich Alexei Nikolaevich. The imperial children were raised largely at Tsarskoye Selo and other suburban palaces, in a household that mixed court ceremony with a deliberately austere private routine of plain food, camp beds, and household chores. They received a home education that included Russian, English, French, and German, as well as history, religion, music, and drawing, and they were formed in the Russian Orthodox Church, which remained central to Tatiana's identity.

Among the four sisters, Tatiana was widely regarded as the most composed and the most conscious of rank. She was taller than Olga, with dark auburn hair, and she often took a practical, organizing role that earned her the family nickname of "the Governess." She was particularly close to Empress Alexandra and frequently represented her mother in small official or family matters when Alexandra was ill. Like her sisters she was a member of the imperial family's inner circle rather than an independent political actor; her public role before 1914 consisted mainly of appearances at court, charitable functions, and family religious observances. Photographs and surviving letters show a reserved young woman who was dutiful toward her parents and affectionate toward her siblings, especially in the closed world created by Alexei's haemophilia and by the Empress's reliance on a small group of intimates.

The First World War transformed the grand duchesses' daily lives. Tatiana, together with her mother and Olga, completed Red Cross training and worked as a surgical nurse in a palace hospital at Tsarskoye Selo, assisting at operations and caring for wounded officers. She also gave her name to the Tatiana Committee, a wartime body concerned with aid to refugees displaced by the fighting. These duties continued until the collapse of the monarchy. After the February Revolution of 1917 and Nicholas II's abdication, the family was confined under guard at the Alexander Palace. In August 1917 the Provisional Government sent them to Tobolsk in western Siberia. In the spring of 1918 Bolshevik authorities moved Nicholas, Alexandra, and one of the daughters to Yekaterinburg; Tatiana and the remaining children followed later to the same detention in the Ipatiev House, known to the guards as the House of Special Purpose.

On the night of 16–17 July 1918, Tatiana was killed with her parents, her four siblings, and several loyal attendants when a Cheka squad under Yakov Yurovsky shot them in the basement of the Ipatiev House. She was twenty-one years old, unmarried, and without children. The bodies were taken to a forest in the Koptyaki area, damaged in an attempt to prevent identification, and buried in a concealed pit. For decades the Soviet government denied or obscured the full circumstances of the killings. Remains discovered in 1979 and publicly examined after 1991 were identified by anthropological study and DNA comparison with living relatives as those of the Emperor, the Empress, and three daughters, one of whom was Tatiana; a second grave found in 2007 was associated with Alexei and the remaining daughter.

The identified remains of Tatiana and several of her family were interred in the Chapel of St. Catherine in the Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg on 17 July 1998. The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia had already glorified Nicholas II and his family as new martyrs in 1981. The Moscow Patriarchate canonized them as passion-bearers in 2000, a category used for those who met death in a Christ-like manner rather than solely as confessors killed for the faith. Their principal feast day in the Orthodox calendar is 17 July. Tatiana is venerated together with the rest of the imperial family; she did not found a religious order, hold episcopal office, or acquire a widely documented set of separate patronages of places or causes.
