Biography

Short Description

Gregorio Celli was an Italian Roman Catholic priest and hermit of the Order of Saint Augustine, later honored as blessed after a papal confirmation of cult. Traditional accounts place his birth in 1225 at Verucchio, a town in the Romagna near Rimini, then within the Papal States. He is said to have entered the Augustinians, commonly associated with the order’s house at Rimini, and to have been ordained a priest. After a period of conventual life he withdrew to a stricter eremitical existence in the hills of the Faentino, on or near Monte Carnerio in the district of Rontana (today in the commune of Brisighella). That withdrawal, rather than any high ecclesiastical office, is the center of his remembered vocation.

Almost everything further that is told of him belongs to later hagiography rather than to contemporary record. Augustinian and local tradition describe a life of austerity, prolonged prayer, and charismatic gifts, including visions and favors granted to those who sought him at the hermitage. No notarial register, chronicle, or other thirteenth- or fourteenth-century document has been shown that would allow a historian to reconstruct his career in detail. The extreme longevity implied by the conventional dates—birth in 1225 and death in 1343, which would make him about 118—is characteristic of cultic legend and should not be treated as a verified biographical fact. What can be affirmed with more confidence is that a durable local memory of a holy Augustinian hermit named Gregorio Celli took root in Verucchio and in the Faenza–Brisighella area and was strong enough to sustain veneration for centuries.

According to the same tradition he died on 11 May 1343 at Rontana, and that date became his liturgical memorial. His cult remained regional, kept by the Augustinians and by the people of Verucchio. In the eighteenth century diocesan authorities examined the devotion; Pope Clement XIV confirmed the cultus on 1 September 1769, an act equivalent to beatification and authorizing public liturgical honor. Celli has not been canonized. Consistent with his identity as a professed religious and priest, he is not recorded as having married or as having had children. Standard martyrologies and the principal Augustinian calendars do not attach a list of patronages to his name.

Outside Romagna and the Order of Saint Augustine, Blessed Gregorio Celli remains an obscure figure. His vita nonetheless illustrates a familiar medieval pattern: the priest who leaves the convent for a mountain hermitage, around whom miracles and an unusually long life are later narrated, and whose cult is regularized centuries afterwards by a papal confirmatio cultus. The historian must separate that pattern from the few points that rest on a reasonably stable tradition: an Augustinian priest from Verucchio, venerated as a hermit in the Faentino, whose feast is kept on 11 May and whose beatification was decreed by Clement XIV in 1769.
