Biography

Short Description

Gregorio Escobar García is not a figure for whom a reliable, detailed biography can be reconstructed from standard historical, ecclesiastical, or hagiographical works. The given name and compound Spanish surname are consistent with a person from Spain or Spanish America, but that onomastic observation does not establish dates, places, state in life, or a religious vocation. No baptismal register, necrology, diocesan chronicle, or decree of the Holy See that can be tied with certainty to this exact name and identity has been verified here.

No birth year, death year, or places of birth and death can be confirmed from sources that meet a historian’s standard of verification. Names resembling this one appear in scattered twentieth-century lists of Spanish clergy and of those who suffered during periods of religious violence, but such lists are numerous and often imprecise; attaching any of those cases to this specific individual would be conjecture. Likewise, no religious order, parish assignment, or episcopal see can be documented.

There is no evidence in the historical lists of the Bishops of Rome or of the Coptic Popes of Alexandria that Gregorio Escobar García ever occupied those offices, nor that he held an Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East patriarchate. Whether he was married, had children, or lived as a celibate cleric or religious is unknown. No feast day under this name is recorded in the Roman Martyrology or in well-known particular calendars, and no patronages of places, causes, or professions can be cited.

In keeping with sound hagiographical method, fields that cannot be filled from a citable source are left blank. An incomplete notice is preferable to a vita assembled from guesswork or from the confusion of similarly named persons. Researchers seeking a fuller account would need to consult diocesan archives, religious-order necrologies, civil registries, or the records of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, none of which are represented with sufficient specificity in the reference material used for this entry.

Until such material is identified and critically assessed, Gregorio Escobar García remains an obscure name rather than a fully documented subject of devotion or of political or ecclesiastical history. The present notice therefore records only what can be stated without invention: a male personal name of Hispanic form, the absence of any papal or patriarchal office, and the lack of verified dates, places, and cult.
