Biography

Short Description

Gregory of Elvira, known in Latin as Gregorius Illiberitanus or Gregorius Baeticus, was bishop of Elvira (ancient Illiberis or Iliberri), a see in the Roman province of Hispania Baetica near present-day Granada in southern Spain, during the later fourth century. Almost nothing is known of his birth, family, or early career. He enters the historical record as bishop in the midst of the Arian controversy, when the emperor Constantius II sought to impose creedal compromises on the Western episcopate. Gregory became one of the most intransigent Latin defenders of the Nicene confession of the full divinity of the Son and refused to accept the rehabilitation of bishops who had subscribed to Arian or homoian formulas.

He associated himself with Lucifer of Cagliari and the Luciferian rigorists, who held that lapsed clergy should not be restored to their sees. This position separated him from more conciliatory Nicene leaders after the political situation changed in the 360s and 370s. The principal contemporary notice of his life is the short chapter devoted to him in Jerome’s De viris illustribus, composed in 392 or 393. Jerome reports that Gregory of Elvira in Baetica had written various treatises in a moderate style and an elegant book On Faith, and that he was still living, though of extreme old age. That statement is the last firmly dated reference to him and shows that he survived into the early 390s.

A modest body of Latin works is now ascribed to Gregory. The treatise De fide orthodoxa contra Arianos argues for Nicene orthodoxy against Arian subordination of the Son. Twenty homilies on scriptural texts, long circulated as the Tractatus Origenis and ranging from Genesis through the Song of Songs, are attributed by modern scholarship to Gregory rather than to Origen or to other Latin writers; they exhibit typological exegesis and moral exhortation characteristic of fourth-century preaching. Other short pieces, including a Tractatus de arca Noe, have been linked to him with less certainty. Together these writings document the biblical culture and anti-Arian theology of a Spanish bishop far from the main Eastern theatres of debate.

The date, place, and circumstances of Gregory’s death are unknown. He was alive in extreme old age in the early 390s and is presumed to have died in or near his see within the following years. Later tradition in the Spanish Church venerated him as a saint, and his feast is kept on 24 April. Because ancient testimony is so limited, many biographical details remain obscure, including his origins, the precise years of his episcopate, and the complete list of his authentic works. He remains, however, a significant witness to a hard-line Nicene current in fourth-century Hispania and to the early Latin literature produced in opposition to Arianism.
