Biography

Short Description

Gregory of Khandzta (Georgian: Grigol Khandzteli) was an eighth- and ninth-century Georgian monk, monastic founder, and saint of the Georgian Orthodox Church. He was born in 759 into an aristocratic family in Kartli, the core eastern province of medieval Georgia, at a time when much of the country lay under the authority of the Arab emirate based at Tbilisi. Left an orphan while still young, he was raised by an aunt of noble standing and given a Christian education. In early adulthood he adopted the monastic life and, with a small group of companions, left Kartli for Klarjeti, a rugged and then sparsely inhabited district in southwestern Georgia (today in northeastern Turkey) that had suffered from earlier warfare and depopulation.

There Gregory established himself at Khandzta, expanding a modest existing hermitage into a coenobitic monastery that became the mother house of a wide monastic network. Over the following decades he founded or restored numerous communities in Tao-Klarjeti, among them Shatberdi, Opiza, Ishkhani, and Tskarostavi. These houses functioned as centers of liturgy, ascetic training, and manuscript production, and they played a decisive role in the cultural and religious recovery of Georgia during the era of Arab domination in the east. Gregory enjoyed the patronage of the Bagratid prince Ashot I, known as Ashot the Great, who used support for monastic foundations as part of a broader effort to rebuild Georgian political life under Byzantine suzerainty. Although ecclesiastical authorities and lay rulers repeatedly urged him to accept a bishopric, Gregory remained an archimandrite, exercising spiritual leadership over the Klarjetian monasteries without taking diocesan office.

The principal medieval account of his life is The Life of Gregory of Khandzta, written about 951 by the monk Giorgi Merchule. Merchule presents Gregory as a strict ascetic, a builder of churches, and a teacher of monks, and the vita is also valued by historians for its portrait of ninth- and tenth-century Georgian society and for its famous assertion that Georgia, though geographically an eastern land, belongs to the Christian West in faith and culture. Gregory died on 5 October 861 at Khandzta, at the age of one hundred and two according to the hagiographical tradition, and was buried at the monastery he had founded. He has been venerated continuously in the Georgian Orthodox Church, which commemorates him on 5 October. His work laid the institutional foundation for the Tao-Klarjeti monastic school that later produced important Georgian literary and theological manuscripts.
